2010-2011 St. Bonaventure Season Preview

Shortly after a middle-of-the-pack finish in the tough Atlantic 10 and a second-team allleague nod for his budding star center Andrew Nicholson, St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt received that phone call that no coach wants. The caller told him that four of his players were allegedly involved in an on-campus fight on March 21 with some Jamestown Community College-Olean basketball players, one of whom was stabbed. Following the incident, two of the players involved – guards Malcolm Eleby and Lewis Leonard – transferred out of Olean, while the other two – forwards Da’Quan Cook and Brett Roseboro – plead guilty to disorderly conduct, but remain with Schmidt’s program. If that weren’t enough trying news, Elijah Carter, a stellar point guard recruit out of Saint Anthony (N.J.) High, de-committed from the Bonnies and will play New England prep school ball instead in hopes of attracting a Big East scholarship. Then, former Niagara Falls guard Kelvin Agee, who sat out the 2009-10 season as a non-qualifier, announced he was leaving Olean to attend Division II Gannon. The losses left Schmidt scrambling with just eight scholarship players. To his credit, he was able to add a pair of international recruits in Sam deHaas from the Netherlands and Matthew Wright from Toronto over the summer. deHaas comes to Olean with a wealth of international experience, having served as the captain of the Dutch under-18 national team. He’ll likely start at the two-guard spot, replacing Chris Matthews, who made 101 3-pointers in 2009-10. Schmidt hopes that Wright ends up being another Toronto diamond in the rough, like Nicholson, who followed up 2009 Atlantic 10 Newcomer of the Year with a second-team allleague season last winter. Blessed with a 7-4 wingspan, Nicholson finished among the top 10 in the league in scoring and rebounding last season and still has room to grow as a player. To better last year’s 15 wins, Schmidt needs returnees Michael Davenport, Ogo Adegboye and Demitrius Conger, along with deHaas and Wright, to drain enough three-balls to keep defenses from simply setting up a wall of defenders in the paint vs. Nicholson.
