2009-2010 Stanford Season Preview

Stanford’s first-half success was ultimately tempered by the reality of what was in store during Pac-10 play.

After going 11-zip in November and December, the first trek into Pac-10 action for coach Johnny Dawkins resulted in a 6-12 record and ninth-place finish, although the Cardinal picked up a conference tourney victory over Oregon State.

An invite to the College Basketball Invitational resulted in wins over Boise State and Wichita State before a trip to Corvallis- yes, the Beavs and Cardinal tangled four times last season – ended the season with a 65-62 overtime loss.

The program lost three players – Anthony Goods, Lawrence Hill and Mitch Johnson who were three-year starters, as well as two key reserves in Kenny Brown and Will Paul. Dawkins isn’t one to harp on what has been lost or what might-have been.

Stanford Backcourt

Goods and Johnson combined to play about 61 of the possible 80 backcourt minutes per game, so there is a lot of time to be picked up by their backups and at least one newcomer.

Jeremy Green showed signs of being a productive scorer as a freshman, averaging 11 points over the final six games, including 22 at Arizona. He’ll be one of the team’s two best scorers.

Another sophomore, Jarrett Mann, will likely have to hold off senior Drew Shiller in order to start. Mann had four assists in one of the OSU clashes.

Shiller, who started his career at San Francisco, has always been known as an exceptional long-range shooter. Shiller had an impressive 2-to-l assist-toturnover ratio as a junior, which are the kinds of numbers that keep a playmaker on the floor.

Junior Da’Veed Dildy cracked double-figure minutes of playing time only twice last season but, along with newcomer Gabriel Harris, is also in contention for playing time.

Stanford Frontcourt

Landry Fields is the most improved player in the Pac-10 since he stepped foot on campus a little more than three years ago, and he is going to be the best player on the floor in most games Stanford plays this season. He’s gone from being a role player to the go-to guy on a team that has lost a ton of talent in the past two classes.

That role made it so he was a deferential player, though those days are long over.

He certainly did that in games against Washington (averaging 18 points and 12.5 rebounds) and UCLA (16 and 10 in one game). Josh Owens, who accounted for two or three of the half-dozen most impressive dunks thrown down by Pac-10 players last season, has an opportunity to dominate some games from inside and around the lane.

Newcomers Andrew Zimmerman and Andy Brown could get major minutes. Zimmerman, who attended a community college but didn’t play last season, was originally recruited to Santa Clara by now Stanford assistant coach Dick Davey.

Brown was among the nation’s more versatile preps last season but suffered a torn ACL late and wasn’t expected to be able to practice fuIl bore until deep into the fall.

2009-2010 Stanford Predictions

Dawkins wants to play the full-court style – offensively and defensively – that he was a big part of while on Mike Krzyzewski’s staff.

But does he have the manpower to play it successfully in one of the most competitive conferences in the country? This season should be telling.

It’s not a particularly strong year for the Pac-10, so stranger things have happened than the possibility of the Cardinal jumping into the upper division. That’s a remote possibility, but more likely the Cardinal is still a year or two away.
