2010-2011 TCU Season Preview

It’s a measure of how unsatisfied TCU coach Jim Christian was with his second Horned Frog edition that he decided to import six new players for 2010-11 with plans to employ many of them quite regularly. The Frogs were weak defensively, didn’t rebound the ball so well and turned it over too frequently. So, here come the reinforcements. The biggest addition is Virginia Tech transfer Hank Thorns, a 5-9 dynamo who will take over at the point right away and should make a big difference. He’s quick, flashy, a good passer and can finish. Though his arrival pushes last year’s starter, junior Ronnie Moss, to the two spot, that’s not the worst thing, since Moss led TCU in scoring last year. While he averaged 5.9 assists per game, he also committed a whopping 120 turnovers. Thorns and Moss should be a productive pairing. Expect senior Greg Hill to see plenty of time on the wing, although it would be good if he improved his 3-point shooting (32.8 percent). If Hill isn’t sharper with his aim, 6-4 JC newcomer Sammy Yeager, a fine long-range sniper, will grab his minutes. Look out for 6-5 J.R. Cadot, another junior college product who can beat people off the dribble and was a third-team AllAmerica last year. The Frogs have some new faces in the frontcourt, but don’t expect a huge upgrade. Freshman Amric Fields goes 6-9 and is an athletic type who does well in pick-and-pop situations, but he’s not a bruiser inside. Andre Clark, who arrives from the junior college ranks but spent his freshman year at Arkansas, is a rebounder and defender, but he’s not a big-time offensive weapon. Jarvis Ray is a 6-6 JC product who has good skills and can shoot well from long range. Among the holdovers, consider 6-9 sophomore Nikola Cerina as a candidate to handle the middle after proving he can rebound and score close to the hoop, while 6-7 sophomore Garlon Green has good athletic ability. The wild card inside is 6-10 Cheick Kone, who has missed two years with a knee injury but could provide some needed depth up front.
