2009-2010 Temple Season Preview

Few teams in America will miss a player as much as Temple will miss Dionte Christmas. The bigger problem is that, as important as the stellar senior was to the Owls, he isn’t the only player coach Fran Dunphy will have to replace. The Owls also lose 7-0 center Sergio Olmos and guard Semaj Inge, both of whom were significant in helping Temple win the A-10 Tournament and get to the NCAA Tournament.

Now Dunphy will bank on Lavoy Allen and Ryan Brooks as team leaders.

Allen, an all-conference selection a year ago, is one of the league’s top big men. He averaged 10.9 points a game and is the A-10′s top returning rebounder, having tallied nine boards a game. He also led the Owls in blocked shots with 50.

Brooks, meanwhile, is a terrific defender who can break his man down and connect from 3-point range, last year doing so at 41 percent.

Juan Fernandez, from Argentina, joined the team at the midway point of the season and took to the offense quickly, averaging 5.5 points and 2.7 assists a game. Senior playmaker Luis Guzman gives Temple some additional experience in the backcourt.

Michael Eric will replace Olmos at center. The 6-11 sophomore can block shots and rebound, but has to develop some moves in the post.

The Owls are hoping to get consistent scoring from sophomores Ramone Moore and Andrew ‘Scootie’ Randall. Both move well without the ball and can spot up for their shots.

Craig Williams, a 6-9 junior, is a big man who can shoot the three. He shot 40 percent from 3-point territory while averaging 5.3 points a game last season.

Freshmen Rahlir Jefferson and Khalif Wyatt were two of the best high school players in the Philadelphia area a year ago, but neither appear to be instant-impact candidates.
