2010-2011 Tennessee Season Preview

At Tennessee’s season-ending banquet celebrating a memorable and improbable season highlighted by the school’s first ever Elite Eight appearance, coach Bruce Pearl thanked each player – from walk-on to stud – for his role in the Vols’ success. It wasn’t just fake rhetoric either. The Vols used just six scholarship players and employed three walk-ons when beating then-No.1 Kansas. The victory occurred a week after All Southeastern Conference first team forward Tyler Smith was dismissed from the team after getting arrested on misdemeanor drug and weapons charges during a traffic stop. Cameron Tatum, Melvin Goins and Brian Williams were in the car with Smith and suspended for their part before later being reinstated. Heading into this season, Tennessee will have to deal with the departure of Wayne Chism, Bobby Maze and J.P. Prince. They accounted for 43-4 percent of the offense and were the unquestioned leaders of the team.

Tennessee Backcourt

The Vols return the most experience on the perimeter. Senior Melvin Goins will take over for Maze at point guard. He is an aggressive defender and capable 3-point shooter. He will be helped by Skylar McBee, Josh Bone and freshman phenom Trae Golden, Georgia’s Mr. Basketball by the AP, who averaged 29.8 points per game and 5.1 assists as a high school senior. After spending his career as a top reserve, Tatum’s role figures to increase considerably. Junior Scotty Hopson is the Vols leading returning scorer and has improved each season. Long and athletic freshman Jordan McCrae reminds Pearl of a young Hopson.

Tennessee Frontcourt

Hulking center Brian Williams will anchor Tennessee in the paint. He was the team’s second- best rebounder and needs to be more assertive to make up for the loss of Chism and Smith. Swingman Renaldo Woolridge, known more for his rapping skills under the stage name “Swiperboy,” will have an opportunity to earn more praise on the court. He can play several positions to fill in when necessary. Sophomore reserve forward Kenny Hall led the team in field-goal percentage (57.8). The bouncy 6-8 post player is a good defender and showed some potential as a freshman. Tennessee signed McDonald’s All-American Tobias Harris, who can hurt defenses inside or out. Once Harris recovers from a broken foot, he should be an impact player for the Vols.

2010-2011 Tennessee Predictions

Given the players Tennessee lost, Tatum thinks the Vols will be underrated, but he is confident the team will be back atop the SEC and return to the NCAA Tournament.

Tennessee Finish in the SEC: 2nd in East Division
