2009-2010 Texas A&M Season Preview

Not too long ago, any suggestion that Texas A&M would have a chance to play in five consecutive NCAA Tournaments would have produced laughter.

Basketball success and the Aggies were not compatible. Texas A&M had reached NCAA play just six times prior to 2006, with its last appearance coming in 1987.

That was before Billy Gillispie pumped some life into the Aggies and made the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and 2007. Mark Turgeon has directed the Aggies to basketball’s promised land in the past two seasons, defying long odds at times to accomplish the feat.

Texas A&M overcame a 3-7 start to Big 12 play before a six-game winning streak earned the Aggies a share of fourth place in the league. A first-round Big 12 Tournament loss to Texas Tech made for some uneasy moments on Selection Sunday, but the Aggies ultimately heard their name called. Texas A&M men made it to the second round before Connecticut ended its season.

Texas A&M should earn a fifth straight trip to NCAA play, as it returns three starters and seven of its top nine scorers from last season’s 24-10 team. One player nor returning is center Chinemelu Elonu, who decided to turn professional.

Texas A&M Backcourt

The Aggies must replace leading scorer Josh Carter, a streaky shooter who led a balanced attack with a 13.8 scoring average. Carter leaves with the distinction of being the first player in school history to play in four straight NCAA Tournaments.

Two of A&M’ s returning starters are guards Donald Sloan and Derrick Roland. Sloan is a solid playmaker and the Aggies’ top returning scorer. Roland averaged 6.3 points but will need to improve his shooting (39 percent from the field, 22 percent from 3-point range) in order to retain his position in the lineup.

Naji Hibbert and Khris Middleton are incoming freshmen who figure to challenge the veterans for minutes. Middleton is a gunner with unlimited range, while Hibbert’s all-around game stamps him as a star of the future.

The Aggies return top backcourt reserves in B.J. Holmes, the team’s top returning threat from beyond the arc, and Dash Harris. A handful of other guards who lack experience also are in the mix.

Texas A&M Frontcourt

Elonu’s departure deprives the Aggies of a rapidly improving player who averaged 9.8 points and 7.3 rebounds as a junior. It also puts pressure on holdover starter Bryan Davis to be even more productive than he was last season, when he averaged 10.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game.

Forwards David Loubeau and Nathan Walkup also will be asked to do more. They combined for 8,1 points and 5.7 rebounds in reserve roles last season. Little-used junior forward Marshall Carrell and 7-0 center James Blasczyk, who redshirted last season, could emerge as contributors.

Freshmen Kourtney Roberson and Ray Turner will get plenty of opportunities to show off their skills.

2009-2010 Texas A&M Predictions

In his two seasons at A&M, Turgeon has won 49 games, the most by a Big 12 coach in his first two years at a league school. That’s six more than predecessor Gillispie won in his first two seasons at College Station.

Even with Elonu’s early out, Turgeon has enough talent to be in the hunt for another trip to the NCAA Tournament, especially if the freshmen are as good as billed. Texas A&M Finish in the Big 12: 4th Texas A&M Projected Post-season Tournament: NCAA
