2009-2010 Texas Tech Season Preview

The return of seven of his team’s top eight scorers should put a smile on Texas Tech coach Pat Knight’s face.

But Knight knows those guys were a part of one of the least effective defensive teams in college basketball last season. The Red Raiders gave up an average of 79 points per game, last in the Big 12 by almost five points per contest and 324th nationally.

If the Red Raiders can, they have a chance to make up some ground this season. If not, Texas Tech could find itself destined for another finish near or at the bottom of the standings, especially given the expected strength of the Big 12.

Texas Tech Backcourt

The loss of Alan Voskull impacts the Red Raiders, as they must replace their most accurate shooter. Voskull led the Big 12 in 3-point percentage (.435) and free-throw percentage (.896) while scoring 13.8 points per game. He also led Texas Tech in steals and averaged 4.1 rebounds

Heading the list of returners is junior point guard John Roberson, who led the Big 12 in assists and the Red Raiders in scoring. He also knocked down 70 3-point shots, 18 fewer than Voskull.

Roberson needs to cut down on his mistakes – he committed 108 turnovers. If he does, he’ll give the Red Raiders a solid point guard to build on.

Nick Okorie is an offensive threat, but a knee injury kept him from being fully effective. He still made 17 starts, and his 30 3-pointers ranked him behind Voskull and Roberson. Wally Dunn saw limited action last season, while recruits Mike Davis, Jaye Crockett and David Tairu are being counted on to provide immediate assistance.

Tairu, a 6-3 junior college transfer, is a mid-range scorer who can get to the basket, while Crockett and Davis each has point skills. Crockett, at 6-7, also can fill in at the off-guard spot.

Texas Tech Frontcourt

Junior Mike Singletary is to the frontcourt what Roberson is to the backcourt.

Singletary, a 6-6 junior, turned in an electrifying performance in the Big 12 Tournament, scoring 43 points against Texas A&M, including 29 in a row. Singletary, the Red Raiders’ sixth man, finished as the team’s third-leading scorer as well as the Red Raiders’ top rebounder.

The lack of a consistent inside scoring threat in recent seasons has plagued the Red Raiders. Knight hopes Robert Lewandowski, a 6-10 sophomore, can develop into the big man they’re lacking. He averaged 6.6 points and 3.7 rebounds a game while shooting 58.1 percent from the field. Forwards D’walyn Roberts and Trevor Cook also have starting experience.

The Red Raiders added some size on the wing in recruits Brad Reese and Theron Jenkins.

2009-2010 Texas Tech Predictions

Knight is starting his second full season as Tech’s coach after taking over at midseason in 2007-08 when his father, Bob, stepped down. Pat Knight is 18-26 and 7-19 in Big 12 play, records that will need to improve if he wants to keep the heat off his seat. Texas Tech Finish in the Big 12: 12th
