2010-2011 Texas Tech Season Preview

Expectations in West Texas are a couple notches higher as Texas Tech prepares for the upcoming basketball season. The Red Raiders return six of their top seven scorers from a team that lost in overtime in the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament. John Roberson and Mike Singletary form one of the best scoring tandems in the Big 12, and D’walyn Roberts joins the pair as returning starters off a 19-16 team. The Red Raiders’ modest taste of success in the NIT has them wanting more this season. To do so, the Red Raiders need to ratchet things up on defense. Texas Tech ranked last in the Big 12 in each of Pat Knight’s two full seasons as coach.

Texas Tech Backcourt

Roberson’s return at the point gives Tech a proven distributor who is also capable of getting his shots. The 5-11 senior led the Big 12 in assists as a sophomore and finished second last season when he dished out an average of 5.4 assists per game. Roberson’s ability to break down opposing defenses complements his skills as a scorer. He averaged 14.6 points last season, and enters his final campaign with 1,347 career points. Roberson is also extremely durable. His average of 35.9 minutes per game ranked second in the league to Baylor’s Tweety Carter. The Red Raiders lose starting guard Nick Okorie, but return David Tairu, who shot 46 percent from beyond the arc and averaged 9.2 points per game. The rest of the backcourt is unproven, with Mike Davis the only other guard returning who saw regular action last season.

Texas Tech Frontcourt

Singletary was the Red Raiders’ leader last season, finishing 11th in the conference in scoring (15 ppg) and ninth in rebounding (6.8). He is capable of taking over games but equally prone to disappear. He also needs to rely less on his outside game, as he shot only 29.7 percent from 3-point range last season. Still, he remains the team’s most difficult matchup. Roberts is a blue-collar guy who fought a foot injury throughout conference play that limited his effectiveness. He did lead the team in shooting (56.1 percent) while averaging 6.2 rebounds per game. Forwards Brad Reese, Theron Jenkins and Robert Lewandowski are experienced, but the Red Raiders are hoping for big things inside from Paul Cooper, a 6-8, 235-pound junior college transfer. Cooper should add aggression in the post, something the Red Raiders sorely needed last season.

2010-2011 Texas Tech Predictions

The Red Raiders got off to a 9-0 start last season that vaulted them into the national rankings, then stumbled down the stretch, losing seven straight and finishing 4-12 in the conference. They improved their victory total by five over the previous season, but additional movement forward depends on improving a defense that gave up 76.1 points. Texas Tech Finish in the Big 12: 9th
