2009-2010 Tulane Season Preview

Is five the lucky number? It just may be for Tulane this season. For the past four years under coach Dave Dickerson, Tulane is 4-0 in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament.

The problem is that the Wave has had to face Memphis in the second round each year. They could indeed still face the Tigers, but it won’t be those Tigers and – just maybe – this could be a better Green Wave team, too.

Last season was the first losing campaign for the Green Wave in three years. Surprisingly, it happened in a year where Tulane finished in the Top 5 of all defensive categories in C-USA and when point guard Kevin Sims emerged as one of the league’s top players.

Sims was one of three players in the conference to lead his team in scoring and assists, started every game and led the team in minutes played. As a scoring point guard, he’s the kind of player who can make all the difference in a league like Conference USA.

Sims could get a big boost from the addition of JC transfer Aaron Holmes. Playing for Santa Fe Community College last season, the former Florida State signee averaged more than 21 points per game and showed that his status as a Top 50 high school recruit wasn’t overstated. He could be in C-USA Newcomer of the Year conversations if he is able to adjust quickly to playing high Division 1.

The Green Wave also picked up some local talent in Keith Cameron, a 6-8, 255-pound forward from East St. John High School. Cameron averaged 12.3 points per game and 10.5 rebounds, along with six blocks his senior season.

Tulane also will have Kris Richard, who can score but is especially valuable for his ability to lock up the opposing team’s best player, which makes one of Tulane’s strengths that much stronger.
