2010-2011 Tulane Season Preview

There are those who may joke that even though Ed Conroy’s neighborhood is bigger, he hasn’t necessarily moved up the career ladder. The former Citadel coach leaves the Southern’s low mid-major world for Conference USA’s growing pedigree, but by landing at struggling Tulane, he has put himself in perhaps a tougher situation. It’s tough to win at a military school, but overcoming the likes of Davidson and Chattanooga is easier than navigating in C-USA’s shark-infested waters on a ship that hasn’t been all that seaworthy of late. Conroy brings his disciplined defensive approach and Princeton-style offense to a team that played bad defense last year, was worst in the league in shooting and didn’t rebound well. The Green Wave also loses two of the top-four scorers from a team that didn’t exactly pile up the points last year. The early returns, however, are promising. Though he had limited time, Conroy was able to assemble a representative recruiting class that should provide immediate benefits. He also landed a transfer from NC State, Josh Davis, who will be available next season. As for this year, perhaps the best Tulane can hope for is a strong foundation, the ability to compete in most conference games and a shot at subduing some second-division opposition. To do that, they’ll need consistent production from senior guard Kris Richard, who needs to shoot better. He’ll be assisted on the perimeter by sophomore Kendall Timmons, who showed an ability to get to the basket last season. Tulane was happy with the play of sophomore Jordan Callahan at the end of last season, and he should play some point guard. Two newcomers – scorer Kevin Brown and pure shooter Jonathan Frye – should fit Conroy’s system well. The Green Wave has some problems up front, thanks to the loss of solid forward Asim McQueen. Senior David Booker needs to shoot better and be more aggressive on the boards, while Aaron Holmes and Johnny Mayhane have to be sharper from the field.
