2010-2011 Tulsa Season Preview

On the surface, it would appear as if the losses of center Jerome Jordan and point man Ben Uzoh should cripple Tulsa this year. We’re talking about two 15-point per game guys, one of them a top rebounder and excellent shot-blocker and the other an assist machine who was tough on defense. But Doug Wojcik has prepared for this day for a while. His goal when he took over at Tulsa was not to have a program that was good once in a while, rather one that sustained, so if the new faces who populate the Golden Hurricane roster can contribute, things should be pretty good this year. The biggest question is whether the team can find someone capable of running the team, as Uzoh did for the past few years. Senior Justin Hurtt showed he could distribute, but he’s more of a scorer, particularly from long range. Perhaps sophomore Donte Medder, who showed he could handle the point at times, will take over, provided he cuts back on his turnovers. Another option is 6-2 junior Glenn Andrews, who missed last year with a knee injury and has shown the ability at times to play the point. But the answer could be 6-4 freshman Jordan Clarkson, a scoring point with a good shot and tremendous basketball smarts. He’s not overly athletic, but he’ll be groomed to handle the position. Expect fellow freshman Tim Peete, an excellent shooter, to see time also. And it will be interesting to watch what 6-4 UConn transfer Scottie Haralson does. He was highly regarded out of high school but never developed into a threat for the Huskies. Up front, junior Steve Idlet will get a chance at increased playing time, as will fellow junior Joe Richard. Both showed the ability to rebound and score inside. The real news could be made by the newcomers. Redshirt freshman Kodi Maduka, Western Kentucky transfer D.J. Magley and freshman Blondy Baruti will all look to fill the void left by Jordan. It’s unlikely anyone player will do it, but together they might come close.
