2009-2010 UAB Season Preview

Mike Davis’ acumen as a recruiter has never been in question. Few reel in the players the way Davis can, and this year that skill will be put to perhaps its greatest test.

Bottom line is, after the Blazers cycled through a group of talented, high-scoring players in Robert Vaden, Paul Delaney, Lawrence Kinnard and Channing Toney, the new kids will have to play right away if the Blazers are to make noise in the conference.

Perhaps most depressing is that even with those players, the Blazers ended last season at 22-12, but in the same tourney in which they starred the season – the NIT. Even that’s probably too high to hope for this season, but Davis has reeled in some players who, sooner or later, could be game-changers in Conference USA.

Dexter Fields appears to be the best of the newcomers, turning down multiple Southeastern Conference offers to sign on with the Blazers. He could have a chance to start early on for UAB. The Blazers got some bad news in late July when Adrien Coleman was denied admission to the school. He instead went to Nebraska.

The most intriguing of the signees is 6-6 point guard Heath Gameren, an Australian picked up in May who Davis has suggested could move off the ball if needed.

Another newcomer who will see immediate time is Elijah Millsap, the brother of Paul Millsap, who transferred from Lousiana-Lafayette where he averaged 9.4 points and 5.4 rebounds a game.

In the middle, the Blazers will depend on center Howard Crawford, the team’s leading returning scorer and rebounder.

Aaron Johnson also is back after starring 17 games a year ago at point guard. He will no longer simply be expected to set the table for the scorers, but will also need to be one himself to make all these newbies come together.
