2010-2011 UConn Season Preview

On the heels of a disappointing 200910 season marred by a distinct lack of team unity and ending in the NIT, an infusion of new blood was imperative this season for UConn. But this is ridiculous. The Huskies will welcome no less than seven incoming freshmen in 2010-11, the second-most in Jim Calhoun’s 25-year tenure. Only an eight-man freshman class in 199192, highlighted by Donyell Marshall, Donny Marshall and current UConn assistant coach Kevin Ollie, has ever had more. Of course, after some growing pains, that group would win a Big East regular season championship and reach the Sweet 16. A year later – without Donyell Marshall but with Ray Allen – the Huskies would advance to the Elite Eight. Calhoun is hoping for a similar path to success with this eclectic group of frosh.

UConn Backcourt

Kemba Walker raised eyebrows at this summer’s LeBron James Skills Academy with his on-floor leadership – not to mention his blazing quickness and improved jump shot. Few would argue that, but UConn’s biggest question may be: who emerges as the No.2 man? Senior Donnell Beverly is a nice complementary player, but it’s a trio of youngsters6- 7 sophomore Jamal Coombs-McDaniel and freshmen Roscoe Smith, a 6-8 small forward, and Shabazz Napier, a 5-11 point guard – that may be the best bets. Another pair of freshmen, 6-4 Jeremy Lamb and 6-7 Niels Giffey of Germany, could be much-needed long-range shooting threats.

UConn Frontcourt

As usual, the Huskies will boast plenty of size up front. But it’s here where they’re the least experienced. Alex Oriakhi, a 6-9 center, was a Big East allrookie last year but struggled with his consistency and had played himself out of the starting lineup by February. Ater Majok’s muchballyhooed midseason arrival fell well short of the hype, but the 6-11 sophomore boasts raw potential. Likewise, 7-foot senior Charles Okwandu has shown occasional flashes. They’ll be joined by a trio of freshmen Enosch Wolf joins Giffey as another German import. Calhoun didn’t have to travel as far to nab 6-9 forward Tyler Olander, who attended high school literally at the foot of UConn’s campus. And at 6-10, Michael Bradley adds more height, though he’s not expected to contribute much this season.

2010-2011 UConn Predictions

Simple mathematics dictate that the Huskies will have to get contributions from at least a few of their freshmen. If nothing else, with Walker running the show, the Huskies aren’t likely to go through stretches of lackadaisical play like they did a year ago. UConn Finish in the Big East: 8th
