2010-2011 USC Season Preview

Coach Kevin O’Neill’s first USC team was on an eight-game winning streak after knocking off visiting Arizona State to go 2-0 in the Pac-10 and 10-4 overall last Jan. 2. Less than 24 hours later, a left jab was followed by a right cross to the psyche of O’Neill’s Trojans. The morning after that 47-37 victory over the Sun Devils, O’Neill was called into a meeting with USC administrators and given the word: As a result of NCAA, conference and school investigations into allegations of violations involving O.J. Mayo during his short stay at the school (he played just the 2007-08 season), the school was self-imposing sanctions on the basketball program. The most attention grabbing of those: The team would not be permitted to participate in any postseason action. Surprisingly – considering that much of the motivation to play well the rest of the way had been terminated – the Trojans were still in title contention until late February.

USC Backcourt

The loss of starting guards Mike Gerrity and Dwight Lewis leaves the Trojans with just one player – Donte Smith – who got significant time last season. Smith shot only 37 percent from the field and had more turnovers than assists. But, until Fordham transfer Jio Fontan becomes eligible on Dec. 15, Smith and freshman Maurice Jones will be the primary playmakers. O’Neill compares the 5-7 Jones to a NBA player of similar dimensions: Earl Boykin. Barring the unforeseen, another freshman, Bryce Jones, will be a given in the backcourt. He’ll start regardless of who is the point guard.

USC Frontcourt

Experience – and rebounding ability abounds. O’Neill can comfortably assume no one in the conference will have a better combination of power forward and center than Alex Stepheson and Nikola Vucevic. Marcus Simmons, an exceptional defender, is expected to complete the starting frontcourt.

2010-2011 USC Predictions

The postseason shackles are removed and the top four or five slots in the conference are anything but clearly spoken for. Depth will be an issue, as any injury or significant illness could derail the Trojans’ hopes of playing beyond the conference tournament. But if they remain relatively healthy and the new guards playas well as O’Neill believes possible, the Trojans’ season could be a couple of weeks longer than it was a year ago.

USC Finish in the PAC-10: 5th
