2010-2011 Utah State Season Preview

No doubt, the Aggies will be good this season. The question is, just how far can this experienced and talented team go? Utah State lost just one starter – point guard Jared Quayle – from last season’s squad that won its third consecutive regularseason WAC championship and advanced to its seventh NCAA Tournament in 12 seasons under coach Stew Morrill. Sure, the Aggies are perennial visitors to the postseason, but they haven’t won a tournament game since defeating Ohio State in 2001. At some point making the tournament becomes secondary. The Aggies want to go deep into it and they may have the team to do it.

Utah State Backcourt

Quayle was a key to the offense, and not just as a patient distributor. He also was the Aggies’ second-leading scorer and rebounder. There may be some early confusion with Quayle gone, but the Aggies believe they have a couple of solid candidates to replace him. Junior Brockeith Pane began his career as a Houston Cougar and spent last season at Midland JC in Texas. He showed glimpses of what he can do at Houston and was a star at Midland, averaging 12 points per game. Highly touted true freshman James Walker out of California also will compete for the job. The rest of the backcourt is filled with familiar names. Seniors Tyler Newbold and Pooh Williams return at guard as does Brian Green, who made a splash off the bench. None is going to light up the scoreboard, but all of them typify Morrill’s mistake-free approach.

Utah State Frontcourt

Tai Wesley has been one of the best players in the WAC, and chances are he’ll add to his prestige during his senior season. Wesley led USU in scoring and rebounding last season and is one of just two players returning to the conference that was a member of the All-WAC first- or second-teams a season ago. At 6-7, Wesley is a bit undersized as far as posts go, but his smarts coupled with his ability to defend, pass and move around the basket more than makes up for any shortcomings. Wesley is expected to draw double teams, which is good news for Nate Bendall. The 6-9 senior, a member of the WAC’s All-Newcomer team last year, averaged 10.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He is a very good defender and also has a little more of an outside game than Wesley, who is most effective with his back to the basket. Brady Jardin also will see some time in the post after a solid sophomore year.

2010-2011 Utah State Predictions

Expectations are high and there don’t seem to be many limitations as to what the Aggies will be able to accomplish this year if things go their way. With so many key seniors, this may be their best chance to go deep into a postseason tournament. Utah State Finish in the WAC: 1st
