2009-2010 UTEP Season Preview

When you lose the top scorer in Conference USA history, it’s hard to remain confident, but the Miners are quite sure that this will be a fine season and perhaps even better than last year, when they made it to the final round of the CBI.

The reason is an influx of newcomers to provide instant support. These are not just any newbies, but three transfers from major conferences who all have shown the ability to be big-time contributors.

Former Louisville prodigy Derrick Caracter is on board, vowing to trim all the way down to 275 from 320 pounds (he had hit 290 in July) and bringing the promise of strong interior play once he’s eligible in mid-December. When motivated, Caracter was unstoppable for the Cardinals. His main task in El Paso will have little to do with his ability and everything with applying himself nightly. If he’s right, there’s very little doubt as to the force he can be in Conference USA.

Christian Polk, who averaged 12 points per game as a freshman at Arizona State, joins the backcourt. He’ll team with 6-2 JC combo man Myron Strong – who was a double-digit scorer in his only year at San Francisco – and high-scoring holdover Randy Culpepper in a potent group. Throw in junior distributor Julyan Stone, and the Miners have some options.

Up front, Jeremy Williams, who played a big role on Colorado’s 2007-08 team, is a slasher and tough inside player. Put him next to 6-11 towers Arnett Moultrie and Claude Britten, and you have a formidable frontline.

Moultrie made the Under-19 national team this summer, and Britten seems clear of the illness that sapped his strength last year. Junior Gabriel McCulley adds depth and solid rebounding from the three spot.
