2010-2011 Villanova Season Preview

Jay Wright has created a monster on the Main Line, and feeding it is getting to be a tougher challenge every year. How else can you explain how a season that produced a first-team All-American (Scottie Reynolds), tied for the second-most wins in school history (25) and resulted in a NO.2 seed for the NCAA Tournament wound up being viewed as a disappointment? Wright enters his 10th season at Villanova with slightly lower outside expectations – but with a roster talented enough to surprise. Replacing Reynolds and his 2,222 career points will take a collective effort, and the unexpected offseason departure of forward Taylor King necessitated some personnel shuffling. But there’s a good mix with three senior starters (Corey Fisher, Corey Stokes and Antonio Pena) and plenty of promising, young talent. Center Mouphtaou Yarou, healthy now, oozes star potential. And both incoming freshmen guard James Bell and 6-6 forward JayVaughn Pinkston – have future starting potential.

Villanova Backcourt

Fisher is on his own now after three years of having Reynolds as a running mate. That could be just what he needs to blossom into a first team All-Big East player. The Wildcats’ assist leader, Fisher boasts a complete game: He can drive, set up teammates and shoot from 3-point range, hitting 39.6 percent last season. With sophomore Maalik Wayns the only other true point guard, Fisher’s minutes should expand considerably. Wayns, who played in all 33 games last year, is the future starter at the position Stokes, an 87.3 percent foul shooter, has the ability to score more than the 9.5 points he averaged last year. He shot a solid 38.3 percent from 3-point range. Swingman Dominic Cheek, a long guard who can defend and rebound, proved he deserves more time as a sophomore. But time also has to be found for Bell, who arrives as an explosive scorer and excels in the up-tempo game. Bell’s athleticism is a good fit for Villanova’s system.

Villanova Frontcourt

Yarou missed the first seven weeks after being diagnosed with Hepatitis B, which stunted his development as a freshman. By the end of the season, the 6-10, 250-pounder’s potential was obvious: He had 17 points and eight rebounds in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Healthy now, he has a chance to be dominant. No one will welcome that more than Pena, who had to play center in Yarou’s absence. Pena, who led the Wildcats in rebounding and shot 57.7 percent, will slide back to power forward now. Isaiah Annwood proved to be a valuable reserve as a freshman after it appeared he might redshirt. Center Maurice Sutton gives the Wildcats length and shot-blocking ability in the middle – and both are qualities this team needs. Expectations are that Pinkston, who averaged 25 points and 13 rebounds as a high school senior, will work his way into the frontcourt mix quickly.

2010-2011 Villanova Predictions

Reynolds’ toughness and willingness to take the big shot late will be missed, but Fisher has been groomed for the role for a while now. This isn’t a deep team (10 scholarship players), but it’s a talented one with no dead weight. The expectations aren’t as high, but maybe they should be. A seventh straight NCAA Tournament trip awaits.

Villanova Finish in the Big East: 2nd
