2010-2011 Virginia Season Preview

Nobody said it would be easy at Virginia for Tony Bennett. Last year he inherited one above-average ACC player from the previous staff, and that one player (Sylven Landesberg) flunked off the team late in the season. What was left behind? A lot of blue-collar players – but not a lot of wins. After a 14-6 start in Bennett’s first 20 games as coach, the Cavaliers lost 10 of their final 11. Three more players transferred after the season, but overall it was addition by subtraction, and Bennett used those free scholarships to sign a six-player class that ranked among the top 15 in the nation. This season, that class will be leaned on heavily. More wins? Probably not. But more effort. Better academics. And the right kind of foundation.

Virginia Backcourt

The best guard in the program might be the head coach, and while Bennett scored 2,285 points in college, that was 20 years ago. But this is a shallow backcourt: a lot of players, not a lot of talent. Starting guards Sammy Zeglinski and Jontel Evans averaged 11.3 points per game and 4.4 assists per game – combined. That ain’t good. Third guard Mustapha Farrakhan shot 35.8 percent from the floor. Not good, either. That is why the best guard on scholarship probably will be freshman KT. Harrell, who figures to replace Landesberg’s minutes, if not his highlevel production. Another freshman to watch is gym rat Billy Baron – the son of Rhode Island coach Jim Baron and the younger brother of ex-Rhody sharpshooter Jimmy Baron. Bennett must see a lot of himself in Billy Baron. He definitely sees hope for the future in these freshmen.

Virginia Frontcourt

You know how harsh we were on the backcourt? Well, um, the backcourt is the strength of the team – because the frontcourt is worse. And that’s with all due respect to Mike Scott, a bruiser who will top 1,000 career points this season. But he’s all there is. The rest of the frontcourt is a collection of veteran role players and untested freshmen, though James Johnson is a promising prospect whose motor compares to that of former UNC workaholic Tyler Hansbrough. Johnson surely will start alongside Scott, maybe because he’s ready, maybe because there’s nobody else. Will Sherrill and Assane Sene averaged 4.6 ppg and 6.6 rpg in 28 minutes. That’s combined – and they’re two of the Cavs’ top three returning frontcourt options. They’ll be surpassed by Johnson and pushed for minutes by another high-motor freshman, Will Regan.

2010-2011 Virginia Predictions

This should be a long season for the Cavaliers. No sense sugar-coating things. The last decade has been hard on this program, and the fix won’t be made in one year. But the players back from last season – just six – are guys Bennett likes, and the six newcomers are his first recruiting class. History will judge this 2010-11 team not for its record, but for the foundation it set.
