2009-2010 Virginia Tech Season Preview

Virginia Tech lost its leading scorer from a year ago, the No.5 scorer in team history in A.D. Vassallo… and we’re saying the Hokies will be better this season?

Yes, we are. Two reasons: One, the league is worse. That’s a major reason, and if it’s not the most complimentary of reasons – not to Virginia Tech, and not to the ACC — well, deal with it. Facts are facts. But here’s another fact, and the second reason why the Hokies will be better even without Vassallo: a monster recruiting class.

This is Seth Greenberg’s second monster class in three years, and that’s how good programs become very good, or even great. Two years ago, guard Malcolm Delaney and big man Jeff Allen led a group of Hokies freshmen to 35.1 points per game, the eighthhighest total in ACC history.

This year, Manny Atkins is the guard and Cadarian Raines is the big man. And there are more freshmen, too. Together, this class could approach the 35.l-mark put up two years ago. And if that happens – if the freshmen can provide that kind of support for proven stars Delaney and Allen – this will be one heck of a year for Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech Backcourt

It starts with Delaney, one of the most improved players in the ACC last season, nearly doubling his freshman scoring average of 9.6 points per game. If he can make a similar improvement this season to his outside shot – he made just 38.5 percent last season, including 35.4 percent on 3-pointers – he would enter All-America territory.

That alone wouldn’t be enough to offset the loss of All-ACC third-teamer Vassallo, but Delaney will get some help from returning wings Dorenzo Hudson and Terrell Bell – and could get a lot more help from Atkins, whose academic excellence and athletic ability makes him one of the league’s most impressive newcomers.

And keep an eye on another freshman, Erick Green, a sizable point guard whose development would allow Delaney to spend more time hunting his shot.

Virginia Tech Frontcourt

Just like in the backcourt, the Hokies return one great player (Allen) and supplement him with some veteran pieces from last season (J.T. Thompson, Victor Davila, Lewis Witcher) and a fabulous freshman (Raines).

Allen is one of the most versatile players in the ACC, ranking third among active leaders in career blocked shots (83), steals (130) and rebounds (528) – in addition to scoring 839 points in two seasons.

For Tech, and for Allen, the good news is that he might not have to keep doing everything for the Hokies to win. For one thing, Thompson came on strong last season after missing 10 games with a hernia; he averaged 12.5 ppg and 5.3 rpg in four postseason games. For another, Raines gives the team another active athlete in the post. Raines might need a year to get his scoring legs beneath him, and can improve the team’s rebounding immediately.

2009-2010 Virginia Tech Predictions

Malcom Delaney’s outside shooting ability will help keep the opposing defense honest. Besides him, a bulk of the scoring will come from Allen and Thompson in the paint. The Hokies’ are going to need to find a few more consistent scoring options, preferably on the perimeter. That is going to put a lot of pressure on Dorenzo Hudson to emerge as a quality shooter or the Hokies will once again find themselves on the wrong side of the bubble.
