2010-2011 Virginia Tech Season Preview

The Hokies are loaded, and not just in relative terms. They aren’t loaded … for a traditionally humble basketball program like Virginia Tech. They’re loaded period. For any team. Anywhere. The top 10 scorers return from a team that won 25 games, and Florida transfer Allan Chaney becomes eligible. Ever seen a team return 99 percent of its offense? Virginia Tech does, led by the Malcolm Delaney, the leading scorer last season in the ACC. That’s scoring, and that’s nice. But that isn’t all. Jeff Allen leads active ACC players in rebounds (781), steals (191) and blocked shots (189). And Delaney leads all ACC players in assists (406). See? Loaded.

Virginia Tech Backcourt

Delaney was a unanimous All-ACC pick in 2010, but if you want to pick a nit, his 3-point shooting percentage continued to drop, from 40.2 percent as a freshman to 35.4 percent as a sophomore to 30.6 percent as a junior. He briefly entered the NBA Draft before learning he wouldn’t be a first-rounder. Delaney became the first Hokie to lead the ACC in scoring, but he didn’t have the league’s highest-scoring game. He didn’t even have the team’s highest-scoring game. That was Dorenzo Hudson, who poured in 41 points to highlight a season in which he made a league-best 10.6-points per game scoring improvement. Terrell Bell is the team’s third guard, and while he shoots 36.1 percent on 3-pointers, he rebounds and defends like a power forward. The top three subs also are back – Erick Green at the point, Ben Boggs and Manny Atkins on the wing – and newcomers Tyrone Garland and Jarell Eddie will push for PT as well. See? Loaded.

Virginia Tech Frontcourt

The Hokies are similarly deep in the frontcourt, where Allen is the unquestioned star he is a double-double candidate every game and where four other players are good enough to contribute too. J.T. Thompson averaged 9.1 ppg and 5.6 rpg in the second half of the season, and he doesn’t even start opposite Allen. Victor Davila does, but for how long? Thompson out-produced Davila off the bench, and Chaney spent last year learning the VT way, one season after being productive in limited minutes for the Gators. And then there’s Cadarian Raines, whose skills are raw, but who is the best athlete of the bunch. Chaney suffered a scare in April when he collapsed during a workout. Tests showed nothing more serious than dehydration, however, and he is expected to be full speed in October.

2010-2011 Virginia Tech Predictions

No more excuses. Virginia Tech has earned the right to be taken as seriously as possible this season, and Greenberg knows it. He put together a tougher schedule for a team that tied the school record last season with 25 wins and whose returning roster has made 343 career starts -102 more than anyone else in the ACC. The Hokies haven’t excelled in the postseason – they are 3-6 in the ACC Tournament under Greenberg – but this team, and this season, could change that trend. And it could change it in a big way.
