2009-2010 Washington Season Preview

After a couple of years in the wilderness, Lorenzo Romar led Washington to its first Pac-10 title in 56 years and got the Huskies back in the NCAA Tournament last season advancing to the second round before a hard-fought loss to Purdue. The Huskies lose two big pieces of last year’s team in All-Pac-10 performers Justin Dentmon and Jon Brockman, the latter the leading rebounder and second-leading scorer in school history. But Romar echoes the team’s fan base when he says that with the bulk of the roster returning, and the addition of heralded point guard Abdul Gaddy, a repeat conference title is possible.

Washington Backcourt

Despite the loss of Dentmon, who flourished in the specialized role of scorer, the Huskies could have one of the best backcourts in the country thanks to the return of junior Venoy Overton, sophomore Isaiah Thomas and Gaddy.

Thomas, a dynamic scorer, was the Pac-10′s Freshman of the Year last season and might focus even more on playing off the ball with the addition of Gaddy, considered one of the best point guard prospects in the country.

Gaddy, who committed to Arizona before changing his mind after the retirement of Lute Olson, might be the most prototypical point guard UW has had under Romar. Thomas spent the offseason working on his outside shot, his biggest need for improvement.

Overton, a starter as a freshman, thrived in a reserve role as a defensive stopper. While he hopes to expand his game this season, he doesn’t figure to stray far from his roots.

For shooting, the Huskies will turn to sophomore Elston Turner, Jr., and freshman CJ Wilcox. Junior swingman Justin Holiday has forged a role as a defensive stopper capable of getting points in transition. The wildcard is sophomore Scott Suggs, a former Mr. Basketball in Missouri, who struggled defensively and rarely saw meaningful minutes.

Washington Frontcourt

It will take a group effort to fill the void left by Brockman, whose offthe-court leadership also will be tough to replace. The Huskies suffered a blow in the summer when JC transfer Charles Garcia, a 6-9 forward, turned up ineligible.

The player who will be counted on most to fill Brockman’s shoes on and off the court is Quincy Pondexter. The 6-6, 215-pounder is a classic swingman, but he did his best work down low when facing slower players. He hopes to expand his perimeter game this season, but the loss of Brockman and the team’s abundance of guards means he’ll spend most of his time in the frontcourt.

Pondexter might have been the team’s best player in the postseason and hopes to show this year he deserved all the accolades he received out of high school, when he was a Top 50 recruit.

Sophomore Darnell Gant was a full-time starter at forward but was more of a role player and could end up as a sixth man this season. A more likely starter is junior Matthew Bryan-Amaning, who struggled with injuries last season and ended up coming off the bench. He showed real promise late in non-conference play but was inconsistent in the Pac-10. Coaches feel he has massive potential as a low-post scorer, something the team will need with Brockman gone.

Romar also has high hopes for redshirt freshman Tyreese Breshers, whose style has drawn comparisons to Charles Barkley. But he has struggled with injuries. Also in the mix is true freshman forward Clarence Trent, an athletic player who may need some development.

2009-2010 Washington Predictions

The addition of Gaddy could make Washington better in the backcourt, which could make up for a probable drop in the frontcourt with the loss of Brockman. While there may be some growing pains, the Huskies appear to have all the tools to make another conference title run and get to the fifth NCAA Tournament in Romar’s eight years.
