Washington Huskies vs West Virginia Mountaineers Preview, Odds & Prediction
The Huskies are led by outspoken senior Quincy Pondexter who has been at the heart of the Huskies’ impressive run. Pondexter had preached patience and perseverance to his teammates when things weren’t going quite this well early in the season, and now they are headed to their first Sweet 16 since 2005. The Huskies are a small team and boast no great size beyond center Matthew Bryan-Amaning. They will need others to help out on the boards if they want to beat a tough West Virginia team. Physical play will be key and they will want a fast paced game to ensue, as that has been their success to now. Sophomore guard Isaiah Thomas is an excellent predator from 3-point range and should be able to take some of the attention off Pondexter.
The Mountaineers are not a great shooting team. WVU’s strength is their physical play along with their domination on the boards. They can really crash the glass with Kevin Jones, Wellington Smith and Devin Ebanks. Ebanks, at 6-9, is a huge problem for foes while the team’s best shooter may be Smith, another 6-9 forward who can step outside to get it done. The Mountaineers will try to slow down the Huskies with their tough, in-your-face man-to-man defense, switching often, to a 1-3-1. Offensively, Da’Sean Butler is the go-to player, and the team will look to Butler for the final shot.
The odds makers have the Mountaineers as -5 -point favorites.
I look for the Mountaineers to take this one to the wire before draining the game-winner in the closing minutes.
