West Virginia Players to Watch: Few coaches know how to feature a player better than Bob Huggins and this year’s star will be Kevin Jones. A burly forward who added a 3-point shot to his repertoire, Jones could blossom into a big-time Big East star.

2010-2011 West Virginia Season Preview

The lasting image from West Virginia’s trip to the Final Four was the collapse of star forward Da’Sean Butler to a knee injury in the middle of Lucas Oil Stadium. With their leader down, the Mountaineers watched Duke pull away for a blowout win. The pain from that loss, and the injury, didn’t last long when WVU fans recalled just what a sweet ride they had enjoyed. For the first time in 50 years, their team was in a Final Four and enjoying a spotlight unlike any other in college sports. The season will live on in the hearts of Mountaineers everywhere, especially since sustained winning appears to be here to stay under favorite son/ coach Bob Huggins. With forward Kevin Jones and guards Joe Mazzulla and Darryl Bryant leading the way, Huggins again has plenty of experience. He may not have a true star, but he’s recruited well enough to return WVU to the tourney for a fourth consecutive year.

West Virginia Backcourt

The Mountaineers ran all the way to 31 wins without a consistent scorer in the guard positions, yet Huggins is thrilled with his personnel. If everyone remains healthy, he said his group will be as good as any around. The optimism comes from a plan to use two penetrators – Mazzulla and Bryant – together more often. Mazzulla has battled shoulder injuries the past two seasons but came up huge in an NCAA upset of Kentucky and hopes to feel good for an entire season. WVU lost the powerful Bryant to a broken foot in the second round of the NCAAs, but Huggins sees the two excellent defenders on the court at the same time quite a bit. There is depth around the veterans as well. Casey Mitchell often clashed with his coaches in his first year out of junior college, but remains a major weapon as a shooter. Dalton Pepper is another jumpshooting threat and reports on combo guard Noah Cottrill are strong.

West Virginia Frontcourt

You’d think a team that loses do-it-all forwards like Butler and Devin Ebanks would be devastated up front, but the Mountaineers have plenty of answers. The biggest is Jones, who Huggins says can be as productive as anyone in the Big East. Senior John Flowers is another elite athlete who benefited from playing with Butler and Ebanks. Now it’s his chance to see what he can do in more of a leadership role. He’s an excellent runner for a big man and will block shots. The keys to the frontcourt should be sophomores Deniz Kilicli and Dan Jennings. Kilicli missed the opening 20 games of his freshman season due to amateurism rules. The Turkish big man is an elite low post scorer and has a chance to make a major impact. Jennings didn’t get a chance to play much, but he’s a rebounder, while 6-10 freshman Kevin Noreen is a shooting forward who could help as well.

2010-2011 West Virginia Predictions

Huggins is telling anyone who will listen that he lost an awful lot off of the Final Four team. True, but no one is crying for him. WVU has enough veterans and youthful talent to win an awful lot of games yet again.
