2010-2011 Wichita State Season Preview

Wichita State passes the eye test. Coach Gregg Marshall has patiently shepherded the program after Mark Turgeon left for Texas A&M in 2007. Some observers felt the Shockers might have been worthy of the NCAA Tournament last season. Wichita State’s top priority is finding a replacement for Clevin Hannah, a two-year starter at the point. In addition to running the offense, Hannah was the Shockers’ most consistent shooter from the perimeter and an excellent free-throw shooter. Demetric Williams showed flashes as Hannah’s backup as a freshman. The rest of the backcourt looks solid with the return of Toure Murry, Graham Hatch, David Kyles and Derek Brown, as well as the addition of junior college transfer Ben Smith and Joe Ragland. Murry is one of the league’s top defenders but is streaky on offense. He needs to improve his shooting. Hatch might be the team’s hardest worker and a guy that gives all-out effort every day. His ability to knock down shots only adds to his value. The Shockers figure to field the league’s top front line, anchored by 7-footer Garrett Stutz and J.T. Durley. Stutz made big strides as a sophomore and finished the season scoring 10 points or more in seven of 10 games. Durley is Wichita State’s most consistent scoring threat up front, but he has to take better care of the basketball Forwards Gabe Blair and Aaron Ellis are athletic defenders and rebounders, and two redshirts – 6-7 Jerome Hamilton and 6-4 Tyler Richardson – join the mix. Then there’s recruit Ehimen Orukpe of Nigeria. He’s another 7-footer who will give the Shockers the shot blocker they’ve lacked. Since coming to Wichita, Marshall has consistently upgraded the talent pool, and he’s not done yet.
