2009-2010 Wisconsin Season Preview

There are only seven schools that have appeared in every NCAA Tournament since 1999 – Arizona, Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Michigan State, Texas … and Wisconsin.

That’s a sweet club, but the Badgers nearly lost their membership last winter. They lost six consecutive Big Ten games in January by a grand total of 32 points. Wisconsin then reeled off five consecutive wins and sneaked into March Madness with a No. 12 seed that represented one of the final two at-large berths.

Once in their accustomed postseason spot, the Badgers upset Florida State and threw a scare into Xavier to make their season worthwhile.

Now the Badgers must respond to the loss of Marcus Landry and Joe Krabbenhoft – a pair of veteran forwards whose production allowed them to stamp their names all over the program’s all-time top 10 lists.

Wisconsin’s ability to replace their 62 minutes per game will determine whether Ryan’s crew remains among the Super Seven.

Wisconsin Backcourt

Every year, the Badgers seem able to rely on a pair of seniors. This time it’s point guard Trevon Hughes and shooting guard Jason Bohannon.

Hughes, who’s in his third year igniting the swing offense, showed improvement in both his assist-to-turnover ratio (from 1.18 to 1.52) and his 3-poim percentage (.314 to .359). But the honorable mention All-Big Ten pick slipped a few notches on the league’s point guard totem pole as players like Michigan State’s Kalin Lucas and Illinois’ Demetri McCamey clambered over him. Hughes retains the potential to be an all-league guard – as his eight career 20-point -plus nights reveal.

Bohannon, who was a revelation as the Badgers’ sixth-man in 2007-08, didn’t have as consistent a shooting eye as a full-time starter. One of his hot streaks, though, coincided with the team’s five-game winning streak that turned around the season.

Muscular sophomore Jordan Taylor solidified his role as the team’s third guard down the stretch. Classmate Rob Wilson’s playing time diminished late, but his athleticism gives him a chance to join the rotation. Swingmen Tim Jarmusz and Ryan Evans should be in the mix, along with slender freshman Diamond Taylor.

Wisconsin Frontcourt

Maybe it was a coincidence, but Wisconsin’s six-game losing streak ended and its five-game winning streak began when Jon Leuer took Keaton Nankivil’s spot in the lineup due to an ankle injury.

Leuer, a multi-dimensional scoring threat who’s equally comfortable under the basket and beyond the 3-point arc, started his run with a 15-point, six-rebound effort against Illinois.

Nankivil, meanwhile, didn’t go in the tank when he went to the bench. Blessed with Kevin McHale-like shoulders and a 7-0 wingspan, the junior slayed Florida State in the NCAA first round with 14 points and four rebounds.

But Nankivil won’t automatically take over the spot vacated by Landry. Freshman Jared Berggren, a Class of 2008 Top 100 recruit who redshirted last season in order to add muscle, earned points for his development on the scout team.

Fourth-year junior J.P. Gavinski and sophomore Ian Markolf are Wisconsin’s biggest guys, but their quickness remains a question.

2009-2010 Wisconsin Predictions

With the Badgers’ relative lack of frontcourt experience and their relatively hefty non-conference slate (UW opens the Maui Invitational with Arizona, could face Gonzaga in Round 2, and plays host to Duke and Marquette in December), their record might not indicate their improvement rate.
