2010-2011 Wisconsin Season Preview

Once and for all, everyone in the college basketball world must commit this phrase to memory: It’s foolish to underestimate Wisconsin. Every year, the Badgers replace at least two senior starters and work around a critical injury. Every year, the Badgers keep contending for the Big Ten title and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. Wisconsin finished just one game out of last season’s Big Ten top spot despite losing forward Jon Leuer – its top scorer, rebounder and shot-blocker – for nine games in the midst of the conference race. Leuer returned in time to help the Badgers reach the second round of the NCAAs, and his broken left wrist wound up helping the fortunes of this season’s squad. When Leuer was sidelined, Jordan Taylor stepped into the starting lineup and proved to be among the league’s best point guards. Young backups Rob Wilson and Ryan Evans also picked up more minutes and gained valuable confidence for this year.

Wisconsin Backcourt

Taylor’s steady leadership and solid decision- making – he led the nation most of the season in assist-to-turnover ratio before finishing third – gives the Badgers a head start on figuring out how to replace the graduated Trevon Hughes and Jason Bohannon. “Pop” and “J-Bo” averaged 63 minutes per game over the past three years – and both finished their careers on the 15-man All-Big Ten team. Wilson, who scored a career-high 13 points against Michigan during Leuer’s absence, has the athleticism to take over a wing spot, although Ryan wants to see more consistency on defense, as well as with his 3-point shot. Senior Tim Jarmusz is a role player extraordinaire who started the first 27 games last season. He’ll provide 20 minutes per game and hit a 3-pointer or two while playing solid defense. Freshmen Josh Gasser and Ben Brust boast the offensive skill sets to play immediately each averaged almost 25 points per game as a high school senior – but Ryan likes to reward defensive effort first. Fifth-year senior walk-on Wquinton Smith will contest Gasser for backup minutes at point guard.

Wisconsin Frontcourt

Leuer, who spent a week in July on the U.S. Select team that practiced against the USA national players as they prepped for the world championships, gives the Badgers someone who can score from anywhere in the swing offense. Leuer has the ability to shoot 3-pointers, post up in the paint and pull up for midrange jumpers. Keaton Nankivil, a third-year starter, also boasts 3-point range and does a solid job on the boards. Ryan, though, wants him to improve his back-to-the-basket game. Redshirt sophomores Ryan Evans and Jared Berggren should make their moves this season. Evans has the size and quickness to guard power forwards as well as shooting guards, while Berggren boasts a nice blend of athleticism and post skills.

2010-2011 Wisconsin Predictions

The Badgers retain just one of the three primary ballhandlers who enabled them to lead the country in limiting turnovers. As players such as Wilson and Evans become more comfortable, Wisconsin should find itself in the hunt for the Big Ten title and enjoying another taste of March Madness.
