2009-2010 Wyoming Season Preview

For the first time in nearly a decade, a void exists in the Wyoming backcourt.

Back-to-back four-year starters Jay Straight and then Brandon Ewing – both Chicago imports – were regular All-Mountain West contenders and weapons capable of more than 20 points on any given night.

The closest name to an heir apparent is sophomore JayDee Luster, a 5-9 New Mexico State transfer who was appointed team captain in the summer. He learned Wyoming culture and took a defensive lesson guarding Ewing (the two-time MWC scoring champ) every day in practice.

Heading into Heath Schroyer’s third season, the Cowboys have developed enough ability and athleticism up front so they will not have to be as dependent on backcourt scoring.

Leading the way is Afam Muojeke, a smooth 6-7 wing from Queens, N.Y., who won a highly contested battle for MWC Freshman of the Year honors. The other returning freshman starter is Adam Waddell, a rare homegrown Wyoming product who, at 6-10, took over in the middle. He’ll have some serious competition for playing time when French native Boubacar Sylla, an Auburn transfer, becomes eligible.

Schroyer’s program hit its biggest stride in years with a 19-14 mark to get into the College Basketball Invitational. It was the Pokes’ best record since 2003, but there was no explaining how the Cowboys gave up their altitude-assisted home advantage to a Northeastern team that had traveled . all day from Boston.

More than wins – the highlight was the first round MWC Tournament upset of No.3 seed New Mexico – and the APR score, which contributed to predecessor Steve McClain’s ouster, improved under Schroyer. The scholarship maximum was restored, and Schroyer was granted a two-year contract extension.
