2010-2011 Wyoming Season Preview

Wyoming was showing signs of potential after a breakthrough win against San Diego State and a narrow loss to New Mexico when disaster struck. That was when Afam Muojeke, the previous year’s Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, was lost to a knee injury. The Cowboys beat Utah but then lost eight in a row before avenging an earlier loss to Air Force, which had made them the only MWC team to lose a regularseason game to the Falcons in two seasons. Air Force then put Wyoming out of its misery with a solid decision in the tournament play-in game. The Cowboys might have overcome the loss of Muojeke, but A.J. Davis also left the program and Adam Waddell played hurt most of the year despite turning in 9.5 points and a team-high 504 boards per game. It’s all a confusing report card for Heath Schroyer. He signs and develops the talent, but injuries and defections hinder continuity. He is very much on the hot seat this year. Few teams can overcome the loss of two starters (Muojeke and Davis, the first and third ranking scorers for the season), and the 21 losses represented Wyoming’s worst result since going 4-22 in 1974. But through all the adversity, a new star emerged. Although San Diego State’s Kawhi Leonard locked up the MWC Freshman of the Year award early, Wyoming newcomer Desmar Jackson, a recruiting steal out of Warren, Ohio, averaged 1805 points over the last 12 games and made the All-MWC third team. With Muojeke and Waddell expected back at full strength, the Cowboys could return to at least a competitive level. That much is certain as the Cowboys ranked last in the Mountain West a year ago in both categories and managed to be America’s worst from long range. Enter Fransisco Cruz and Brian Gibson, who put up freakish JC numbers in the team’s greatest trouble spots – Cruz hit on 47 percent of his treys, and Gibson was the nation’s top rebounder at 16.6 per game.
