2009 Record: 8-5 MWC Record: 5-3 2010 Returning Starters: 11: 5 Offense, 5 Defense, Kicker

Coach: Troy Calhoun (Air Force and overall: 25-14, 3 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Clay Hendrix, Blane Morgan Defensive Coordinators: Matt Wallerstedt, Charlton Warren

2010 Air Force Players to Watch: QB Tim Jefferson, TB Asher Clark, FB Jared Tew, CB Reggie Rembert, CB Anthony Wright

2010 Air Force Strengths:
The offensive skill positions return intact and the secondary is the best in years. Defensively, look for Wright and Rembert to be on the receiving end of postseason honors.

2010 Air Force Weaknesses:
All that backfield experience won’t count for much if the all-new offensive line doesn’t develop in a hurry. There are numerous gaps on the defensive front seven, which, typically, isn’t very big.

2010 Air Force Offense:

With quarterbacks Tim Jefferson and Connor Dietz, along with a ground corps headed by fullback Jared Tew and tailback Asher Clark, Air Force brings back 100 percent of its 3,645 rushing yards and 1,149 passing yards. Senior Kevin Fogler produced an unusually productive campaign for an AFA receiver, with 25 catches for 567 yards and five touchdowns. There’s just one hang up: Jefferson, Dietz, Tew, Clark and company will operate behind an entirely new line. Last season, four of the front five weighed 250 or less. Head coach Troy Calhoun doesn’t see much difference in the size department in 2010. The offense is predicated on quickness. Although the option game and blocking schemes remain essential to the team’s identity, Air Force under Calhoun has long evolved from its stereotype of an antiquated wishbone format. The modern Air Force offense has more in common with the spread; the quarterback just doesn’t pass as much. If Jefferson can stay healthy, he’s the starter behind center (or in the shotgun). The 2008 MWC Freshman of the Year has had to overcome injuries and academic setbacks, but he has ample talent. Now, he has nearly two years of experience running the complex offense. Dietz has enough experience to avoid a severe drop-off if Jefferson has to come out of a game.

2010 Air Force Defense:

The Falcons are as well stocked at cornerback as most teams in the West, thanks to junior Anthony Wright and senior Reggie Rembert. Rembert comes off first-team All-MWC honors. Wright picked off seven passes and tied a school record with three thefts in the Armed Forces Bowl vs. Houston. Junior safety Jon Davis can’t be ignored, either, after he made 56 tackles and picked off three passes, including one returned for a touchdown. Questions abound at linebacker. Seniors Patrick Hennessey and Ken Lamendola missed spring ball with injuries suffered last fall. Air Force’s 2009 defensive success in large part was owed to nose tackle Ben Garland. But he’s gone, and Calhoun said, “It could be one of those committee efforts,” regarding possible replacements.

2010 Air Force Special Teams:

As if he didn’t contribute enough at corner, Rembert is the school’s all-time kickoff return leader. He also lends a hand on punt returns, although Wright leads that area with an 18.2-yard average. He returned one punt for a score last season. Placekicker Erik Soderberg is coming off a 104 point season with 22 neld goals and 38 extra points. The only real void on special teams is finding a punter to replace Brandon Geyer’s 43-yard average.

2010 Air Force Predictions:

If the Falcons don’t get too discouraged (and that’s unlikely with an Air Force team) after an early trip to Oklahoma, they shouldn’t do any worse than their usual fourth or fifth place position in the MWC, with a bowl bid. The offense is loaded … if a new front five doesn’t short-circuit things.
