2010 Arizona Players to Watch: QB Nick Foles, RB Nic Grigsby, C Colin Baxter, WR Juron Criner, DE Brooks Reed, DE Ricky Elmore, CB Trevin Wade
2010 Arizona Strengths:
The offense has loads of weapons and should be able to spread teams out or play smashmouth as needed. Criner is a red-zone threat with his go-up-and-get-it ability on fade passes. Reed and Elmore could end up being the most productive pair of defensive ends in the Pac-l0.
2010 Arizona Weaknesses:
Arizona has new coordinators on both sides of the ball, although Stoops eased the transition by promoting three assistants and hiring Greg Brown to fill co-coordinator roles. Seth Littrell, who will be 32 when the season starts, is the new play-caller on offense. An inexperienced linebacker corps is the big personnel question.
2010 Arizona Offense:
Quarterback Nick Foles worked on improving his footwork and accuracy this spring under new quarterbacks coach Frank Scelfo, who also did wonders with the throwing motion of backup Matt Scott. Scott has the wheels to be a running threat, which will only be greater with his improved passing. Foles remains the starter, but the coaches figure to at least have a package for Scott as a change-up to the defense. In fact, the offense – which should be the team’s strength, a rarity for the Wildcats – features all kinds of versatility. An experienced starting line has great size, and Arizona boasts the personnel to go “jumbo” when needed. Senior Nic Grigsby is a 1,000-yard running back with make-you-miss capabilities, although staying healthy was a problem last season. VA has plenty of backfield depth with Keola Antolin, big back Greg Nwoko, bigger back Taimi Tutogi and redshirt freshman Daniel Jenkins. Mostly, Arizona will run the spread, utilizing a deep receiving group, led by junior Juron Criner, who built off his breakthrough 2009 season with a big spring.
2010 Arizona Defense:
The Wildcats are strong up front, especially at end with seniors Brooks Reed and Ricky Elmore. Reed had 8.5 sacks as a sophomore before being slowed by injuries last season, when Elmore picked up the slack with 10.5 sacks. Arizona tinkered in the spring with a pass-rushing scheme called “Cheetah,” in which the team used four defensive ends across the front and as many as six defensive backs. The tackle spots don’t have identifiable stars, but there is ample depth, and junior college transfer Willie Mobley arrives in the fall. The secondary isn’t as deep as the coaches would like, but cornerback Trevin Wade is a ball-hawk with All-Pac-10 ability. The potential trouble spot is linebacker, where the Wildcats lost all three starters, plus nickel back Corey Hall. A pair of mid-year junior college transfers Derek Earls and Paul Vassallo – helped the cause in the spring. Sophomore Jake Fischer is an undersized player who makes up for it with smarts and toughness.
2010 Arizona Special Teams:
Punter Keenyn Crier hasn’t fully tapped the potential of his big leg due to inconsistency. The senior averaged 41.5 yards last season, a drop from the 43.8 yards he averaged in his first two seasons as the starter. Kicker Alex Zendejas partly lived up to the family name last season, beating Arizona State with a last-second 32-yard field goal, just as uncle Max beat the Sun Devils a couple of times in the 1980s. Zendejas made 17 of 22 field-goal attempts, although his range remains a question.

2010 Arizona Predictions:
Mike Stoops has successfully re-built Arizona, reaching the Holiday Bowl last season. That game provided a rare non-competitive moment for the Cats, whose hallmark in the past few years has been playing everybody tough. Arizona should return to that level, with ultimate success being determined by how it does in close games.
