2009 Record: 2-11 MAC Record: 2-6 2010 Returning Starters: 18: 10 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Stan Parrish (Ball State: 2-11, 1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Eddie Faulkner Defensive Coordinators: Jay Hood

2010 Ball State Players to Watch: TB MiQuale Lewis, RB Cory Sykes, DE Robert Eddins, SS Sean Baker, WR Briggs Orsbon, OG Michael Switzer, OT Cameron Lowry

2010 Ball State Strengths:
The running game should be explosive and consistent. Lewis can get through small openings in the line. and Sykes can also take plays the distance. The left side of the offensive line is solid.

2010 Ball State Weaknesses:
The Cardinals need to get adecisive answer to the quarterback question. Kelly Page probably will be under center at the start of the season, but he still has to eam coaches’ confidence. Ball State has to play significantly better on defense. The unit had only one game in which they allowed less than 20 points last year.

2010 Ball State Offense:

The Cardinals got good news in the offseason when the NCAA gave tailback MiQuale Lewis an extra season of eligibility. Lewis is only 5-6, 201 pounds, but his impact is huge. Lewis helped the Cardinals rank sixth in the MAC in rushing in 2009, running for 871 yards and five touchdowns. However, he’ll try to get closer to his 2008 form, when he rushed for 1,736 yards and 22 touchdowns. Lewis is an elusive back with the ability to break long plays. He demonstrated his explosiveness in a 301-yard effort against Eastern Michigan last year. On the line, left tackle Cameron Lowry is a dominant player, and left guard Michael Switzer is nearly as good. Center Kreg Hunter is an effective player in the middle, while the right side of the line is up for grabs among a number of players who have starting experience. After spring practice, there were still no answers at quarterback. Kelly Page appeared to have a slight edge on redshirt freshman Aaron Mershman, but the final judgment likely won’t be made until the start of the season. Page was the starter last year before a broken thumb sent him to the sidelines in the seventh game. Mershman will get a chance to show what he can do, as will top recruit Keith Wenning. Wide receiver Briggs Orsbon will be a top target. He had 51 catches for 469 yards in 2009.

2010 Ball State Defense:

The Cardinals will depend on their active and aggressive linebackers. Outside linebacker Davyd Jones led the team in tackles with 100. Middle linebacker Travis Freeman came up with 93 stops. Defensive end Robert Eddins has to have a big senior year if the Cardinals are going to present any problems to opposing passing games. Eddins had seven sacks a year ago and also registered 13.5 tackles for loss. Strong safety Sean Baker showed signs last year of becoming a game-changing player. He led the team with four interceptions and was fifth on the team in tackles with 61.

2010 Ball State Special Teams:

Ian McGarvey returns after converting 18 of 21 field-goal attempts, making all five from 40 to 49 yards. Punter Scott Kovanda averaged 40.0 yards per punt. Eric Williams is adequate as a kick returner, but the Cardinals would like to see more big-play ability from him. Charlie Todd (11.7 yards per return, one touchdown) showed some breakaway ability as a punt returner.

2010 Ball State Predictions:

Stan Parrish’s first season as head coach of the Cardinals was a struggle as he took over a program that had started 12-0 in 2008, but lost much of its offensive punch after that season. Parrish still has a lot of rebuilding to do, including figuring out the future at quarterback, but at least MiQuale Lewis will be fun to watch with the ball while Ball State tries to climb up the MAC mountain.
