2009 Record: 3-9 Big 12 Record: 2-6 2010 Returning Starters: 14: 7 Offense, 5 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Art Briles (Baylor 8-16, 2 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Randy Clements, Philip Montgomery Defensive Coordinators: Brian Norwood

2010 Baylor Players to Watch: QB Robert Griffin, IR Kendall Wright, OT Danny Watkins, RB Jay Finley, OT Ivory Wade, LB Antonio Johnson, NG Phil Taylor, P Derek Epperson

2010 Baylor Strengths:
If Griffin can return to his 2008 Freshman All-America form, the Bears could have an explosive offense. Wright should be one of the best receivers in the Big 12, while newcomers like Terrance Williams and Josh Gordon have plenty of ability. The linebacklng corps will be the strength of the defense.

2010 Baylor Weaknesses:
The Bears are counting on young defensive ends Gary Mason and Tevin Elliot and junior Zac Scotton to supply more pressure. The Bears also need to force more turnovers after intercepting just 10 passes last year.

2010 Baylor Offense:

For Baylor to break its 15-year bowl drought, quarterback Robert Griffin must prove that his knee can withstand the punishment that Big 12 defenses will deliver. Griffin tore the ACL in his right knee in the third game of last season, after a brilliant freshman year in which he passed for 2,091 yards and 15 touchdowns and rushed for 843 yards and 13 scores. Griffin is expected to be ready for full contact drills by August. The Bears also return sophomore Nick Florence, who started seven games last season and threw for 1,786 yards and six touchdowns. Baylor has plenty of young, talented receivers, led by Kendall Wright, who caught a team-high 66 passes for 740 yards and four touchdowns last season. Lanear Sampson is coming off a solid year in which he caught 29 passes for 297 yards and two scores. Following an injury-plagued junior year, running back Jay Finley should be healthy after undergoing offseason ankle surgery.

2010 Baylor Defense:

With four-time All-Big 12 linebacker Joe Pawelek and safety Jordan Lake gone, Baylor will need new leaders on defense. Baylor’s linebacker corps still will be the strength of the defense. Senior outside linebacker Antonio Johnson should be Baylor’s premier defensive player after collecting 77 tackles and showing big-play ability by making six tackles for loss, recovering two fumbles and returning an interception for 54 yards. Johnson will be joined by veterans Elliot Coffey and Earl Patin at outside linebacker, while senior Chris Francis and redshirt freshman Chris McAllister had one of the best battles of the spring at middle linebacker. For Baylor’s defense to improve, it must collect more sacks after recording just 18 last year. Junior Zac Scotton brings experience at defensive end, but sophomore Gary Mason and redshirt freshman Tevin Elliot need to have big seasons. Senior noseguard Phil Taylor should play more consistently after a disappointing junior year. Baylor’s secondary has considerable experience at cornerback with seniors Clifton Odom and Antareis Bryan and sophomore Chance Casey, who had a solid freshman year. Tim Atchison will make the switch from cornerback to free safety, while senior Byron Landor will step in at strong safety.

2010 Baylor Special Teams:

Redshirt freshman Aaron Jones made a strong push at kicker during spring in his battle against returning starter Ben Parks. Derek Epperson returns for his senior year at punter after averaging 44.8 yards last season. Terrance Williams is an explosive return man who averaged 24.1 yards on kicks and 14-4 yards on punts.

2010 Baylor Predictions:

After two straight 4-8 seasons under Art Briles, the Bears are looking for a breakthrough year. But much of Baylor’s success will depend on whether Griffin can stay healthy and if the defense can put more pressure on quarterbacks. Baylor’s schedule is more favorable with Big 12 home games against Kansas, Kansas State and Texas A&M, and a date against Texas Tech at the Cotton Bowl.
