vs.

Northern Illinois at Iowa State – 7:30 PM ET

The Cyclones got a small lift last year, highlighted by an upset at Nebraska. Don’t expect that “magic” to continue into this season as the offense struggled mightily last year and Iowa State will be without its best defensive player, safety David Sims, who is suspended for the season opener because of an off-field incident. Huskies have a tough non-conference slate of BCS teams and they won’t get swept. This is the weakest team they’ll face, too.

Prediction: Northern Illinois by 3 – Bet Now

Odds: Northern Illinois: +4 – Iowa State: -4 Over/Under: 48

vs.

Illinois at Missouri – 12:30 PM ET

What a terrible month to start the season for Missouri. Off-field turmoil has hit the Tigers hard, with the biggest blow coming when senior running back and team captain Derrick Washington was charged with sexual assault on Monday. Washington, now suspended, seemed poised to regain his 2008 form, when he rushed for over 1,000 yards. Still, Illinois is terrible. They won just 3 games last year and didn’t improve much in the offseason.

Prediction: Missouri by 7 – Bet Now

Odds: Illinois: +11.5 – Missouri: -11.5 Over/Under: 53.5

vs.

Colorado vs. Colorado Sate – 2:00 PM ET

There isn’t a bigger lame duck coach in all of college football then Colorado’s Dan Hawkins, who is back in Boulder only because CU couldn’t afford to pay his buyout. Hawkins has benched his son, Cody Hawkins, in favor of Tyler Hansen at QB, but it won’t matter as the Buffs are terrible on offense. Still, CSU is terrible so don’t expect a repeat of last year’s season-opening upset.

Prediction: Colorado by 10 – Bet Now

Odds: Colorado: -12 – Colorado Sate: +12 Over/Under: 46.5

vs.

UCLA at Kansas State – 3:30 PM on ABC

In the second year of the SECOND Bill Snyder Era, the Wildcats get a big test right off the bat against a Pac-10 opponent, and at home. Here’s the thing, though: UCLA is banged up like you couldn’t believe, and quarterback and the offensive line are huge liabilities. K-State’s biggest strength should be its offense and running back Daniel Thomas, who led the Big 12 in rushing last year. Also, don’t forget the Bruins are a middle-of-the-pack team in their own league, at the very best. Kind of like the Wildcats!

Prediction: Kansas State by 3 – Bet Now

Odds: UCLA: +2.5 – Kansas State: -2.5 Over/Under: 43

vs.

#5 Texas vs. Rice – 3:30 PM ET on ESPN

Hopefully, for Rice’s sake, the Longhorns won’t play their starters the entire game. The most important thing to watch here will be how new quarterback Garrett Gilbert does for Texas in what should be limited action to begin with. If the Longhorns are up by three touchdowns anytime in the third quarter, expect him to get pulled. Don’t expect the scoring to stop, however.

Prediction: Texas by 42 – Bet Now

Odds: Texas: -29.5 – Rice: +29.5 Over/Under: 59

vs.

Washington State at Oklahoma State – 7:00 PM ET

Washington State has managed to transform itself from a football power into one of the worst big-conference BCS teams in the nation in the last five years, and are ripe for another pounding here to open the season by playing in ultra-tough Stillwater, Okla. The Cowboys are replacing a boatload of talent on offense but … they’re facing a team that only scored 18 touchdowns and went 1-11 last season.

Prediction: Oklahoma State by 21 – Bet Now

Odds: Washington State: +15.5 – Oklahoma State: -15.5 Over/Under: 49

vs.

Sam Houston State at Baylor – 7:00 PM ET

Welcome back, Robert Griffin! Baylor seemed poised to make a run to a bowl-game before their exciting young quarterback tore his ACL in the first game and the Bears watched another fall dissipate into misery. Griffin is back this year, and his knee seems fine.

Prediction: Baylor by 14 – Bet Now

vs.

Stephen F. Austin at Texas A&M – 7:00 PM ET

The Aggies could be the surprise up-and-comer in the Big 12 this year with a dynamic quarterback returning in Jerrod Johnson, and get a nice little warm-up with FCS power Stephen F. Austin. Here’s the thing, though, if you want to bet on A&M more this season: Mike Sherman is still their coach, last time we checked. Just sayin’.

Prediction: Texas A&M by 20 – Bet Now

vs.

North Dakota State at Kansas – 7:00 PM ET on ESPN

Easy does it for the Jayhawks in opening the Turner Gill era with this creampuff of a first game. Kansas has a gaggle of new personnel all over the field, including at quarterback, where Kale Pick takes over for three-year starter Todd Reesing. Kansas will definitely win, but it could be ugly.

Prediction: Kansas by 10 – Bet Now

vs.

Western Kentucky at #8 Nebraska – 7:00 PM ET

There may not be a more boring game in all of college football this Saturday. Watch (insert name in blank here) struggle at quarterback for the Huskers … YAWNNNNNN … watch the Huskers dominate a low-level opponent YAWNNNNNNNNN … watch Nebraska coach Bo Pelini get mad on the sideline then trash the media after game … DOUBLE YAWNNNNNN.

Prediction: Nebraska by 28 – Bet Now

Odds: Western Kentucky: +37.5 – Nebraska: -37.5 Over/Under: 52

vs.

Utah State at #7 Oklahoma – 7:00 PM ET

Another situation, just like Texas, where you pray to God the highly-ranked home team doesn’t leave its starters in for the whole game. The Sooners have A LOT of NFL talent on this roster and have a shot to be the best team in the Big 12. The biggest question mark for Oklahoma is how quarterback Landry Jones will perform after a rollercoaster year in 2009. Don’t expect Bob Stoops to give him much leash.

Prediction: Oklahoma by 35 – Bet Now

Odds: Utah State: +34 – Oklahoma: -34 Over/Under: 57

Sunday, September 5, 2010

vs.

Southern Methodist at Texas Tech – 3:30 PM ET

There’s some concern about the Red Raiders’ offense now that Run N’ Shoot mastermind Mike Leach is gone, but new coach Tommy Tuberville has always been known for his defenses and put together some of the best in the SEC during his time at Auburn. SMU will be a good test to open the season but they can’t hang with what is mid-level Big 12 talent for a whole game. However, don’t expect any more 600-yard passing games out of Texas Tech. Maybe 600 yards rushing…

Prediction: Texas Tech by 20 – Bet Now

Odds: Southern Methodist: +14 – Texas Tech: -14 Over/Under: 60.5
