vs.

No. 14 TCU at Baylor, 8 p.m. ET (ESPN)

Kudos to Baylor for playing this game. In-state school, one of the nation’s best and the Bears step up to the challenge … and TCU is ranked a little high at No. 14. The Horned Frogs lost six starters on offense to the NFL and five more starters on defense. Expect Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III to make this a close game while new TCU starting QB Casey Pachall struggles.

Prediction: TCU 28 – Baylor 24 – Bet Now

Odds: TCU: -4 – Baylor: +4 Over/Under: 56.5

vs.

Miami (Ohio) at No. 21 Missouri, 12 p.m. ET

New Missouri quarterback James Franklin will have big shoes to fill following first-round draft pick Blaine Gabbert, but he’ll have the advantage of having back every single wide receiver that caught a pass for the Tigers in 2010. Miami is a good team in the MAC, but Tigers are a different level with a defense that should be one of the best in the Big 12.

Prediction: Missouri 38 – Miami (Ohio) 3 – Bet Now

Odds: Missouri: -20.5 – Miami (Ohio): +20.5 Over/Under: 47.5

vs.

Northern Iowa vs. Iowa State, 7 p.m. ET

Iowa State has a new quarterback in junior-college transfer Steele Jantz and four new running backs they’ll trot out … most of the time that would spell disaster, but in this case all are improvements over their predecessors. Cyclones show they’re getting better each year in a game that wasn’t even a gimme a couple of years ago.

Prediction: Iowa State 35 – Northern Iowa 7 – Bet Now

Odds: Iowa State: -11 – Northern Iowa: +11

vs.

McNeese State at Kansas, 7 p.m. ET

Possibly the Jayhawks’ only opportunity for a win this season. Keep in mind they lost to North Dakota State in last year’s opener … but this will be an improvement and Kansas should be able to at least eke out a victory.

Prediction: Kansas 21 – McNeese State 10 – Bet Now

Odds: Kansas: -14.5 – McNeese State: +14.5

vs.

Eastern Kentucky at Kansas State, 7 p.m. ET

Kansas State has won 19 straight openers under Bill Snyder and this will be no different. Wildcats are good at home, and this will be a sellout … plus they can run the ball pretty well. Lots of returners, an improved defense and they know how to score.

Prediction: Kansas State 47 – Eastern Kentucky 0 – Bet Now

Odds: Kansas State: -29 – Eastern Kentucky: +29

vs.

Texas State at Texas Tech, 7 p.m. ET

It’s tough to tell what Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville will do if the Red Raiders, as expected, get up early. A scheduling quagmire gives Tech their bye week next Saturday before they play 11 straight games to end the year. My guess is once they’ll play through the third quarter because he’ll want to make sure they get game reps … but also that he doesn’t risk unnecessary injury with such a grueling stretch ahead.

Prediction: Texas Tech 40 – Texas State 10 – Bet Now

Odds: Texas Tech: -38.5 – Texas State: +38.5

vs.

Louisiana-Lafayette at No. 9 Oklahoma State, 7 p.m. ET

Oklahoma State has the potential to be one of the best teams in the nation with NFL-ready players back in QB Brandon Weeden and wide receiver Justin Blackmon. This team, more than any other under Mike Gundy, has legitimate national-title aspirations. Also, Louisiana-Lafayette is one of the worst teams in all of college football.

Prediction: Oklahoma State 56 – Louisiana-Lafayette 7 – Bet Now

Odds: Oklahoma State: -36.5 – Louisiana-Lafayette: +36.5 Over/Under: 64

vs.

Rice at Texas, 8 p.m. ET

No, Texas isn’t ranked to start the season. But basically win one game and they’ll be back in the rankings … no doubt the short-term motivation for the Longhorns here. Texas has gone back to much-maligned quarterback Garrett Gilbert as the starter over Case McCoy, so worst case scenario here is Gilbert struggling and getting the quick yank … and come on, both Texas quarterbacks can’t be terrible, right?

Prediction: Texas 35 – Rice 7 – Bet Now

Odds: Texas: -24.5 – Rice: +24.5 Over/Under: 55.5

vs.

Tulsa at No. 1 Oklahoma, 8 pm. ET (FX)

Interesting scenario here where each team lost arguably its best player before the season started, with Tulsa’s wide receiver/kick returner Damaris Johnson, suspended amidst a fraud/shoplifting scandal and Oklahoma linebacker Travis Lewis out until probably the sixth week with a foot injury. OU will honor dead linebacker Austin Box before the game … the emotion of that and missing Johnson, the NCAA’s career all-purpose yardage leader, could end the Golden Hurricane before the game even starts.

Prediction: Oklahoma 45, Tulsa 10 – Bet Now

Odds: Oklahoma: -25 – Tulsa: +25 Over/Under: 64.5
