This is probably the only time all season that the most interesting game on the Big Ten schedule features the Minnesota Golden Gophers. It is a rare occurrence that a Big Ten squad visits the home of a non BCS school and even rarer is the case where they are not favoured. This says a lot about the state of Minny football and it is one of only 3 games where the conference isn’t favoured this week. The conference is top heavy this year but none of the top teams should be challenged this week.

vs.

Towson at Indiana – 7:30 PM ET

The Hoosiers scheduled an easy win to start the season. FCS Towson won only two games last year and shouldn’t put up much of a fight. Indiana has won its last six openers covering each time it was a lined game. This one won’t be so those looking to make a living betting the Hoosiers, who were 7-4 ATS last season, will have to wait.

Prediction: Indiana 42 – Towson 3 – Bet Now

vs.

Minnesota at Middle Tennessee– 7:30 PM ET on ESPNU

Love this first week matchup. I mean what could be better than seeing the Blue Raiders and Golden Gophers charge into battle. There are some rumors floating about MTSU QB Dwight Dasher but assuming that he plays the Raiders have the definite edge. They are 0-2 against the Big Ten but I think that drought is over in what could be an impressive victory. This team actually has a chance at a perfect season. I know CRAZY!

Prediction: MTSU 30 – Minnesota 17 – Bet Now

Odds: MTSU: +3 – Minnesota: -3 Over/Under: 48½

vs.

Marshall at #2 Ohio State – 7:30 PM ET

Most pundits have the Buckeye in their top five but when it is all said and done I think they will be more towards the middle of the Top 25. A couple of losses are in their future but not against the Thundering Herd who just can’t match the talent and athleticism of OSU. Terrelle Pryor will look Heisman worthy but it is just an illusion.

Prediction: Ohio State 42 – Marshall 10 – Bet Now

Odds: Ohio State: -28½ – Marshall: +28½ Over/Under: 47

vs.

Western Michigan at Michigan State – 12:00 PM ET on ESPN2

Lots of folks are expecting big things from the Spartans this year, especially after last season’s disappointing ending. A year ago this might have been a contest but with WMU QB Tim Hiller now in the NFL the Broncos are definitely rebuilding in the MAC. MSU is 9-2 against WMU with those two losses occurring in 1917 and 1919. The chances of a loss to the Broncos this century is very unlikely.

Prediction: Michigan State 38 – Western Michigan 14 – Bet Now

Odds: Michigan State: -22 – Western Michigan: +22 Over/Under: 52

vs.

Youngstown State at #19 Penn State – 12:00 PM ET

You can sort of forgive Paterno for scheduling an FCS opponent in week one because the following week they are off to Alabama. These two teams faced off back in ‘06 and 37-3 victory for PSU was the result. It should be about the same this year but the Nittany Lions might take a little while to get rolling with an inexperienced QB taking over for Daryll Clark.

Prediction: Penn State 35 – Youngstown State 3 – Bet Now

vs.

Eastern Illinois at #9 Iowa – 12:05 PM ET

Iowa has a habit of scheduling a softie in week one and has been averaging victories of 40-6. This should be no exception although Eastern Illinois is at least a decent FCS team that made the playoffs last year. Knowing the Hawkeyes they won’t run up the score but it still won’t be close. Their defense could be even better this year than last.

Prediction: Iowa 35 – Eastern Illinois 3 – Bet Now

vs.

Illinois vs. Missouri – 12:30 PM ET

What used to be a good rivalry could be just another blowout loss by the Illini in week 1. They have faced Mizzou in week 1 the past three years with the losses getting progressively worse each season (6 points, 10 points and 28 points last year). This program could be the worst in the conference this year. I don’t expect them to put up much of a fight againt a Mizzou squad most have tabbed for second place in the Big 12 North.

Prediction: Missouri 35 – Illinois 10 – Bet Now

Odds: Missouri: -11½ – Illinois: +11½ Over/Under: 53½

vs.

Purdue at Notre Dame – 3:30 PM ET on ABC

One of the more interesting matchups as we witness the starts to two new eras. Robert Marve has people excited down in West Lafayette while Brian Kelly has the entire nation curious as to whether he can work his magic again with the Irish. My guess is that this game will not answer all of our questions about both squads but it should be entertaining. Hard to bet against ND at home with Kelly the first week. You know he will have something creative in mind to assure victory.

Prediction: Notre Dame 28 – Purdue 24 – Bet Now

Odds: Notre Dame: -11 – Purdue: +11 Over/Under: 54

vs.

Northwestern at Vanderbilt – 7:30 PM ET on ESPN3.com

There is something about this matchup that I just love…I just can’t put my finger on it. Northwestern has the better pigskin pedigree but they will be working in a new QB. They have won 5 straight openers so coach Pat Fitzgerald knows how to get his team ready. On the other side Vandy coach Caldwell has had his job for about 5 minutes. Not a lot of excitement here but the game should be hard fought.

Prediction: Northwestern 24 – Vanderblt 10 – Bet Now

Odds: Northwestern: -5 – Vanderblt: +5 Over/Under: 44

vs.

#12 Wisconsin at UNLV – 11:00 PM ET

This is the last game of the week and I have no clue who will be staying up to watch it. The Badgers should steam roll the Rebels although it should be noted that they won by only 7 as a 25 point favourite at UNLV in ‘07. They were ranked #5 then and expectations are similarly high this season. P.S. Wiscy has won nine straight non conference away games.

Prediction: Wisconsin 42 – UNLV 9 – Bet Now

Odds: Wisconsin: -21 – UNLV: +21 Over/Under: 56
