I like the slate of games this weekend even though Michigan vs Michigan State is a little dull for the marquee in that noon slot. In looking at the battle for Michigan I expect a back and forth affair between teams looking to build confidence and prove they are capable of challenging for a title..and don’t sleep on Northwestern vs Iowa. The Wildcats have owned the Hawkeyes of late with both teams coming off of losses that weren’t that far from being victories the desperation factor should be high…but the game with the most intrigue for me is Ohio State vs. Illinois. For three quarters last Saturday night it looked like maybe the Buckeyes hadn’t fallen that far but then the wheels came off in Lincoln and they crashed and burned. Meanwhile Illinois is cruising and looking like a legit title contender and overall program on the rise. They are playing great on offense and their defense is better than expected. With everything at OSU another loss might be a clincher in their demise due to the program’s recent wicked ways while an Illinois win would be the biggest since they beat OSU in their most recent Rose Bowl season. vs.

Purdue @ Penn State – 12:00 PM ET

Penn State won last week at home against Iowa but it wasn’t pretty. I was hoping that the winner of that game might show enough to be considered a contender but all it really showed was how mediocre both teams are this year. Penn State should have little trouble winning in Happy Valley against the Boilermakers. The defense is proving to be stingier than originally thought and against Purdue they should have an easier time scoring provided their quarterbacking is not a total disaster. No guarantees there.

Prediction: Penn State 28 – Purdue 10 – Bet Now

Odds: Penn State: +11.5 – Purdue: +11.5 Over/Under: 41

vs.

#11 Michigan @ #23 Michigan State – 12:00 PM ET on ESPN

This should be a good one. Michigan survived their trip to Northwestern but not without a few scares – they really dominated in the second half. The trip to East Lansing is a little shorter but no less dangerous for the still perfect Wolverines. The Spartans have had an extra week to prepare for Denard Robinson and Co. and don’t forget they beat Big Blue 34-17 last year. In that game they kept the elusive Robinson contained and picked him off three times in a relatively easy victory. State has just a single loss and this victory will keep them in contention for the division title as well as shoot them up the rankings. This team is very underrated right now.

Prediction: Michigan State 35 – Michigan 28 – Bet Now

Odds: Michigan State: -2.5 – Michigan: +2.5 Over/Under: 49

vs.

Indiana @ #4 Wisconsin – 12:00 PM ET on ESPN2

The way the Badgers have been playing this might be the most lopsided game in the conference all season long. Indiana is still trying to figure things out in the first year of new coach Wilson’s regime while the Badgers are trying to figure out who they have to get some dirt on to sneak into the top three in the rankings. I see no scenario in which the Hoosiers can make this competitive. Wisconsin should be running downhill all game long. Hopefully coach Bret Bielema will let QB Russell Wilson throw some passes to maintain his Heisman candidacy.

Prediction: Wisconsin 49 – Indiana 13 – Bet Now

Odds: Wisconsin: -40 – Indiana: +40 Over/Under: 60

vs.

Ohio State @ #16 Illinois – 3:30 PM ET on ABC

A perfect spot for the Illini here. They took care of business last week and they get to play an Ohio State team that has to be reeling after last week’s choke job against Nebraska on the road. This is a good Illinois team that is not 6-0 by accident. After last week’s loss it might be a stretch but the Illini might catch the Buckeyes a little overconfident since they have had a lot of success in Champagne and against Illinois in general. OSU has won 7 of the last 10 in the series and all of Illinois’ wins have come at the Horseshoe as opposed to at home. This line opened at Illinois -3.5. If you like that side then grab it quickly and the number may be closer to 7 by kickoff. Memo to OSU: Try covering Illini receiver AJ Jenkins – ⅔ of all passing yards have come from the senior receiver.

Prediction:Illinois 27 – Ohio State 24 – Bet Now

Odds: Illinois: -3.5 – Ohio State: +3.5 Over/Under: 43.5

vs.

Northwestern @ Iowa – 7:00 PM ET

Tough one to call here. Both teams were upset candidates last week and both came up short. Iowa might be a tough trip for some but the Wildcats have won the last three times they have visited the Hawkeyes and four out of five overall. When you get into conference play some teams just have each other’s numbers and it doesn’t always make sense. These have usually been low scoring affairs with no winning team scoring more than 28 points in the last six meetings. You would think that would favour the Hawkeyes who are almost always a strong defensive team but NW has made just enough plays to pull out the victories.

Prediction: Northwestern 27 – Iowa 21 – Bet Now

Odds: Northwestern: +6.5 – Iowa: -6.5 Over/Under: 54
