2009 Record: 8-5 PAC 10 Record: 5-4 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 8 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Jeff Tedford (California and overall: 67-35, 8 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Andy Ludwig Defensive Coordinators: Clancy Pendergast

2010 California Players to Watch: RB Shane Vereen, QB Kevin Riley, WR Marvin Jones, DE Cameron Jordan, LB Mike Mohamed, FS Sean Cattouse, P Bryan Anger

2010 California Strengths: Cal returns four starters on what should be a solid offensive line. Jones is Cal’s most gifted receiver since DeSean Jackson. The defense has a playmaker on every unit (Jordan. Mohamed and Cattouse), and Anger is a weapon when it comes to field position.

2010 California Weaknesses:
If Riley and the receivers don’t connect frequently, elite defenses will play the run, stuff Vereen and smother the Bears’ attack for the second straight season. Defensively, the back seven is woefully short on proven playmakers and could be forced to rely on true freshmen.

2010 California Offense:

The problem is not replacing Jahvid Best, a score-from-anywhere game-breaker who was picked in the first round of the NFL Draft. Shane Vereen can step in for Best. He proved that late last season when Best was injured by rushing for 193 yards and three touchdowns at Stanford. No, the problem for Cal is everywhere else. Will senior quarterback Kevin Riley become a more consistent passer, capable of making plays with his arm and his feet? Can the Bears move the chains against the fIercest defenses in the Pac-10? Are the receivers ready to complement Riley, taking Cal’s aerial attack to a higher level of efficiency? The Bears have one elite receiver, junior Marvin Jones, and a bevy of unknowns. If the incoming class doesn’t yield a contributor or two, there will be trouble. Is the line ready to coalesce into a protective wall around Riley? Four starters return, including center Chris Guarnero, an honorable mention All-Pac-10 player last season, and guard Matt Summers-Gavin, a Freshman All-American. The Bears scored more than 24 points in only three conference games last season. Unless the line solidifies, the offense will sputter once again.

2010 California Defense:

Longtime coordinator Bob Gregory left in the offseason to take an assistant coaching position at Boise State. His replacement, Clancy Pendergast, will keep Gregory’s 3-4 scheme in place but hit the accelerator. Look for the Bears to apply more pressure even, it seems, at the risk of giving up big plays. The player most likely to create chaos is senior end Cameron Jordan (six sacks last season), whose effort and consistency have yet to match his physical skills. Veteran Derrick Hill returns at nose tackle but will be pushed for playing time by Kendrick Payne. The linebackers are led by senior Mike Mohamed, one of the Pac-l0′s best, but the unit is otherwise lacking in proven playmakers. The Bears need immediate and steady contributions from true freshman Chris Martin. Aside from talented free safety Sean Cattouse, the secondary is littered with questions. The unit grossly underachieved last season, in part because of poor play by veteran cornerback Darian Hagan. Bryant Nnabuife is expected to man one corner, with Josh Hill and Hagan competing on the other side.

2010 California Special Teams:

The Bears have one of the nation’s top punters in junior Bryan Anger, who had 14 punts of 50 yards or more last season. But the kicking game is a concern. Vince D’Amato and Giorgio Tavecchio made a combined 15 of 24 field goals last season and they averaged a paltry 58.9 yards on kickoffs.

2010 California Predictions:

With a veteran offensive line and senior quarterback, Cal has the foundation for a solid season. But the downfield passing game and defense must improve for the Bears to challenge for a top-tier finish. There is potential for backsliding, as well, if Cal doesn’t solve the psychological issues that led to five blowout losses last season.
