Coach: Ron English (Eastern Michigan: 0-12, 1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Ken Karcher Defensive Coordinators: Phil Snow

2010 Eastern Michigan Players to Watch: QB Alex Gillett, RB Dwayne Priest, TE Ben Thayer, C Eric Davis, DT Brandon Slater, LB Tim Fort, LB Marcus English, CB Arrington Hicks

2010 Eastern Michigan Strengths:
The Eagles are coming off awinless season, so legitimate strengths are scarce. Priest can be ahandful In the running game because he can bounce out of tackles. Backup Corey Welch gives the team some depth at tailback.

2010 Eastern Michigan Weaknesses:
Even if the team completely buys into English’s aggressive game plan, this club looks like asieve defensively. Eastem Michigan gave up 459 points last year. and their leading tackler has moved on. Finding away to slow opponents down Is essential for this team to gain respectability.

2010 Eastern Michigan Offense:

Sophomore Alex Gillett is an athletic quarterback who can run with the ball, buy time with his quick feet and throw the ball accurately. Gillett, fIlling in for injured Andy Schmitt last season, completed 68 of 137 passes for 763 yards. He should be better this season, especially after a decent performance in the spring. Redshirt freshman Devontae Payne, a pocket passer with size (6-6), will back up Gillett. Gillett will need plenty of help from the running game, and the No.1 back should be senior Dwayne Priest, who gained 633 yards last season with seven touchdowns. Priest is a strong runner who is at his best when bouhcing out of tackles and fIghting for extra yards. Backup Corey Welch could add versatility after a solid spring performance. The pass-catching crew will be led by tight end Ben Thayer, as well as wide receivers Tyrone Burke and Kinsman Thomas. Thayer caught 29 passes in 2009 for 261 yards and two touchdowns. Burke caught 16 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown and has good timing when it comes to leaping for the balL Thomas is the closest thing to a breakaway threat the Eagles have. The line has some experience but must get better. Senior center Eric Davis is the best of the group.

2010 Eastern Michigan Defense:

Coach Ron English, trying to instill a more aggressive and physical edge on defense, has some talent and depth on the line, including end Javon Reese and tackle Ryan Leonard. Reese is fairly quick and was second on the team in tackles for loss (nine) a year ago. He had 27 tackles and one sack. Leonard had 27 tackles, including 7.5 for loss and one sack. The linebacker crew will face the challenge of competing without Andre Hatchett, who led the team with 113 tackles during his senior season. English will look to veterans Tim Fort and Marcus English to make up for the loss. Fort is an active hitter who had 43 tackles and three tackles for loss. English had 41 tackles, one interception and fIve passes defended. Cornerback Arrington Hicks started 10 games last year. He had 32 tackles and deflected four passes, but did not have an interception.

2010 Eastern Michigan Special Teams:

The Eagles will be inexperienced at the two kicking positions. Punter Zach Johnson and placekicker Joe Carithers have moved on after productive seasons. English will be depending on inexperienced junior Thomas Baertschi to man both of those roles.

2010 Eastern Michigan Predictions:

The Eagles have high hopes of showing improvement after their disastrous 0-12 season a year ago. They should be able to get better and put at least two or three wins on the board. Moving closer toward a .500 record might be a bit of a reach unless the defense buys completely into English’s preaching to get more physical while quarterback Alex Gillett can stay calm in the face of signifIcant pressure from opposing defenses.
