2009 Record: 6-7 WAC Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 12: 4 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Greg McMackin (Hawaii and overall: 13-14, 2 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Nick Rolovlch Defensive Coordinators: Dave Aranda

2010 Hawaii Players to Watch: QB Bryant Moniz, WR Greg Salas, WR Kealoha Pilares, DB Spencer Smith, DB Mana Sliva, DL Elliott Purcell

2010 Hawaii Strengths:
The wide-open Hawaii offense finished among the top three nationally in passing for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons. This year should be no different thanks to talented wideouts Salas and Pilares, and seasoned QB Moniz.

2010 Hawaii Weaknesses:
The offensive line is practically brand new, with only junior Austin Hansen returning up tront. The defense is also without areturning starter at linebacker, giving the two coordinators plenty to think about as fall camp approaches.

2010 Hawaii Offense:

As explosive as Hawaii’s run-and-shoot offense can be in the wild, wild WAC, it hasn’t lived up to its potential since June Jones pulled up stakes and became the head coach of Southern Methodist in 2008. Entering his third season, coach Greg McMackin needs to win more games if he’s to survive his fiveyear contract. Last year, the Warriors were seventh in the league and 89th nationally in scoring, averaging 22.8 points a game. During Jones’ heyday, that might have been one quarter’s worth for Hawaii’s explosive passing attack. McMackin faces several obstacles this fall. Top quarterback Bryant Moniz missed most of the spring with a personal problem. And the offensive line is as green as the mountain ranges on Oahu, giving WAC defenses hope that they can contain the Warriors. On a positive note, Hawaii is blessed with a contingent of talented receivers, led by Greg Salas, who had 106 receptions for 1,590 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Kealoha PHares had 66 catches for 690 yards and four scores. Hawaii was third in the nation in passing, averaging 337 yards a game, but McMackin, a former defensive coordinator, is still trying to fmd a balance between the run and pass.

2010 Hawaii Defense:

The Warriors’ defense relies on gambles that lead to turnovers, but they can’t match the size of a Wisconsin or the speed of a Boise State to make enough plays to win consistently. This year, the Warriors appear solid in the secondary, but they lost all three linebackers and have a defensive front that’s light. It would seem unlikely that Hawaii could line up and stop a team like season-opening opponent USC. That said, the Warriors’ experienced secondary should give new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda some options. Hawaii is hopeful defensive backs Mana Silva (six interceptions last season) and Spencer Smith (77 tackles, seven passes broken up) can do their jobs well enough to give the front seven time to develop.

2010 Hawaii Special Teams:

Placekicker Scott Enos and punter Alex Dunnachie give the Warriors some much-needed experience. Enos hit 12 of 19 neld goals, 34 of 34 PATs and managed six touchbacks on kickoffs last year. Dunnachie didn’t have a great freshman season in 2009, but he still averaged 39.2 yards per kick on 42 punts. The return game needs some help. Hawaii didn’t score a touchdown on punts or kickoffs last year, but it didn’t allow any, either. Opponents averaged only 1.7 yards on punt returns and 22.1 on kickoffs.

2010 Hawaii Predictions:

Getting closer to three years removed from its Sugar Bowl campaign, Hawaii is still in transition under its third-year head coach. The offense can’t decide if it’s a true run-and shoot attack, and the defense can’t stop a big, physical team. McMackin will find it tough again challenging for the WAC title.
