2009 Record: 8-5 WAC Record: 4-4 2010 Returning Starters: 18: 6 Offense, 10 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Robb Akey (Idaho and overall: 11-26, 3 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Steve Axman Defensive Coordinators: Mark Criner

2010 Idaho Players to Watch: QB Nathan Enderle, RB Deonte Jackson, RB Princeton McCarty, WR Eric Greenwood, SS Shiloh Keo, DE Aaron Lavarias, LB JoJo Dickson, DT Jonah Sataraka

2010 Idaho Strengths:
If the offensive line can hold up, Idaho should be able to score aton of points again. Enderle was very good last year and he has talented. experienced receivers and quality running backs with whom to work.

2010 Idaho Weaknesses:
There are a few, but two are glaring. Can an inexperienced offensive line survive and keep the UI offense on a roll? Sure, almost the entire defense is back. but it needs to be much better for the Vandals to contend behind Boise State in the WAC.

2010 Idaho Offense:

The Vandals can score. They proved it at every turn of the 2009 season, a pattern that climaxed during their thrilling 43-42 Humanitarian Bowl victory over Bowling Green. It was Idaho’s first bowl appearance since 1998, which led to its first winning season since 1999. Idaho returns most of the players who helped it finish second in the conference and ninth in the nation in total offense. But many key parts, especially along the line, are gone. The biggest hole is left by Mike Iupati, the guard drafted 17th overall by the 4gers. Junior Matt’Cleveland is the only returning starter on the line. Only one of the starting newcomers, Tyrone Novikoff, has any signincant experience. While the line is young, everyone else on offense has a familiar face. Quarterback Nathan Enderle came of age in 2009, throwing 22 touchdown passes and just nine interceptions. He also led the WAC in passing yards per game (264.2) and finished second in passing efficiency. Enderle’s top receiver, Max Komar, is gone, but Maurice Shaw and Eric Greenwood are returning starters, as is tight end Daniel Hardy. Also gone is running back DeMaundray Woolridge, who broke out in his one year at Idaho with nearly 1,000 yards and 18 touchdowns. The running responsibilities now fall to a combination of Princeton McCarty and Deonte Jackson, who carried the ball 115 and 87 times, respectively.

2010 Idaho Defense:

The good news is 10 starters are back Depending on how you look at it, that could also be the bad news. The defense surrendered 30 points or more in seven games and finished last in the WAC in scoring defense. The Vandals have an experienced unit, loaded with individuals who have shown ability, just not consistency. The secondary is arguably the most maligned portion of UI’s defense. The secondary does contain Idaho’s best defensive weapon, however. Shiloh Keo has started since his freshman year and, despite battling injuries the past couple years, returned to form in 2009 to fInish second in the conference in tackles. The front line and the linebackers had their issues as well in 2009, but again, both are experienced groups and expect to show improvement. The 40 red-zone touchdowns UI allowed last year were the most in the WAC, and the Vandals had only 15 sacks. The linebackers might be the Vandals’ best defensive unit. JoJo Dickson and Robert Siavii finished in respectable positions on the conference’s total tackle list.

2010 Idaho Special Teams:

Placekicker Trey Farquhar looks to follow up on a solid freshman year in which he connected on 13 of 19 field goal attempts, including a conferencelong 54 yarder. Punter Bobby Cowan also returns.

2010 Idaho Predictions:

Was 2009 just a high-water mark during a decade spent well below sea level? Can the Vandals build on last season’s surprising success and thrilling conclusion? If the offensive line and defense can mature and perform, UI can prove 2009 wasn’t an aberration.
