2009 Record: 2-10 C-USA Record: 1-7 2010 Returning Starters: 14: 7 Offense, 7 Defense

Coach: Larry Porter (At Memphis and overall: 1st year)

Offensive Coordinators: Eric Price Defensive Coordinators: Jay Hopson

2010 Memphis Players to Watch: WR Jermalne McKenzie, DE Frank Trotter, DT Dontarl Poe, LB Jamon Hughes, S Marcus Ball

2010 Memphis Strengths:
The defense – uncharacteristically a weakness for the program In recent years – should be much Improved. Hopson, the defensive coordinator who comes from Michigan, has one of the league’s top safeties (Ball) and a strong defensive front coached by former Alabama head coach Mike DuBose.

2010 Memphis Weaknesses:
Memphis lacks experience at Quarterback. Only Tyler Bass, a redshlrt sophomore, has experience. Cannon Smith is a transfer from the University of Miami who played in one game for the Hurricanes. Junior college transfer Andy Summerlin injured his shoulder In the spring. Ryan Williams Is a true freshman.

2010 Memphis Offense:

One of new coach Larry Porter’s top priorities in the spring was finding a quarterback. Memphis lost three of its top four quarterbacks from a year ago and opened with five candidates, including three who had never taken an FBS snap. Freshman Ryan Williams graduated early from his high school in Miramar, Fla., to enroll at Memphis. The decision may benefit him in the fall. Also competing will be University of Miami transfer Cannon Smith, who spent most of the spring running the No.1 offense. Junior college transfer Andy Summerlin, who missed a large portion of the spring after undergoing shoulder surgery, is a candidate if he’s healthy. The only quarterback with considerable experience is sophomore Tyler Bass, who started several games last season before injuring his shoulder. The Tigers lost their top running back – 1,000yard rusher Curtis Steele – and the top two receivers in the program’s history. But they return their offensive line, led by veteran starter Dominik Riley. Porter expects incoming freshman Jerrell Rhodes to be in the mix at running back with returnees Lance Smith, a former Wisconsin player, and Gregory Ray, a player with an oft-injured past who enjoyed an injury-free spring. Several newcomers at receiver are capable of making big plays, including Jermaine McKenzie, another Miami transfer, and junior college transfers Dejarrius Adams and Billy Foster.

2010 Memphis Defense:

New coordinator Jay Hopson didn’t inherit the best of units. He made several spring moves Winston Bowens from linebacker to defensive end, Dasmine Cathey from defensive line to linebacker and DeRon Furr from defensive back to linebacker. The line is anchored by emerging playmaker Dontari Poe and reliable veteran Frank Trotter. Trotter, the defensive MVP of the spring game, seems to have benefited from his move from defensive tackle to end. Former Mississippi State player Jamon Hughes burst onto the scene last fall, and the punishing linebacker led the team with 87 tackles, including 5.5 for loss. The marquee player on defense is safety Marcus Ball, who came from Florida State and made his Memphis debut last falL Ball has NFL-worthy recovery speed and a flair for the acrobatic interception. Darius Davis moves to cornerback, a more natural position for the Memphis native’s skill set.

2010 Memphis Special Teams:

Memphis must replace third-team AP All-American punter Matt Reagan, who also was a reliable placekicker. Paulo Henriques, who handled kickoffs last season, is slated to move into the placekicking role. Memphis averaged a paltry 3.0 yards per punt return in 2009, 119th nationally, and was 10th in the league in kickoff return average (20.6).

2010 Memphis Predictions:

Porter, a running back for Memphis in the early 1990s, takes over for Tommy West, who spent nine years at Memphis and led the program to five bowl games before slipping to 2-10 last season. Known for his recruiting prowess, Porter quickly established a tone of structure and discipline, but a challenging schedule will make it a difficult debut season.
