2009 Record: 6-6 Big 12 Record: 4-4 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 8 Offense, 8 Defense, Kicker

Coach: Gary Plnkel (Missouri and overall: 67-46, 9 years)

Offensive Coordinators: David Yost Defensive Coordinators: Dave Steckel

2010 Missouri Players to Watch: QB Blaine Gabbert, TB Derrick Washington, WR Jerrell Jackson, WR T.J. Moe, DE Aldon Smith, MLB Will Ebner, CB Kevin Rutland, KGrant Ressel

2010 Missouri Strengths:
The Tigers have a healthy returning quarterback with as strong an arm as you’ll find in college. Washington has rediscovered his quickness of 2008. Smith might be the best pure pass-rusher in the Big 12. The linebacker corps is deep and talented. Ressel was the country’s most accurate kicker last fall.

2010 Missouri Weaknesses:
Who emerges as Gabbert’s primary receivers? Aside from Smith, who else will provide apass rush? The pass defense has been torched over the past two years. Will the results improve with the same cast of defensive backs?

2010 Missouri Offense:

Junior quarterback Blaine Gabbert has one primary challenge: Identify his playmakers. Missouri must replace All-American slot receiver Danario Alexander, who smashed team records last fall with 113 receptions for an NCAA-best 1,781 yards. The most experienced pass catchers are outside receiver Wes Kemp, a punishing blocker, and slot threat Jerrell Jackson. Michael Egnew, a flex tight end, was among Gabbert’s favorite targets in the spring. At the other outside position, Rolandis Woodland has improved his hands since last season, enough to gain an edge on gangly redshirt freshman L’Damian Washington. The most intriguing candidate for catches might be T.J. Moe, a prolific prep quarterback who specializes in the screens and underneath routes that define the Tigers’ slot position. Gabbert, who had the Big 12 Conference’s second- best efficiency rating (140.5) last season, will benefit from a more reliable running game. That is what he had this spring when senior tailback Derrick Washington rediscovered his quickness and became the offense’s steadiest performer. The line loses just one starter in right guard Kurtis Gregory. Center Tim Barnes anchors the group for a third consecutive year. Right tackle Dan Hoch could emerge as one of the Big 12′s best.

2010 Missouri Defense:

In his second season overseeing the defense, Dave Steckel returns a group bubbling with potential, despite losing three-year All-Big 12 linebacker Sean Weatherspoon. Steckel has reservoirs of depth, starting with a pair of middle linebackers – Will Ebner and Luke Lambert – considered co-starters by the coaching staff. Either will be flanked by Andrew Gachkar and first-time starter Zaviar Gooden. Their production will largely depend on the four players up front, especially defensive end Aldon Smith, who is corning off an 11.5-sack season. He was the league’s Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2009. Missouri’s most scrutinized position group should be its most experienced – secondary. Cornerbacks Carl Gettis and Kevin Rutland are returning starters, and both figure to benefit from a more aggressive coverage philosophy adopted this spring. If the Tigers can develop consistent playmakers among the safeties – returning starter Jasper Simmons will man one spot and redshirt freshman Matt White could be at the other – the new coverages could solve a pass defense that has ranked among the nation’s worst in the past two years.

2010 Missouri Special Teams:

Kicker Grant Ressel returns after a phenomenal debut season. The former walk-on set an NCAA record for single-season accuracy, drilling 26 of 27 field goal attempts and all 39 of his extra-point kicks. Trey Barrow, another walk-on, is the leading candidate to replace reliable punter Jake Harry.

2010 Missouri Predictions:

Missouri can keep pace with Nebraska for the Big 12 North Division crown if the offense continues to evolve with a new crew of targets for Gabbert. The defense is speedy with a potential All-American in Smith, a loaded linebacker corps and two veteran cornerbacks. But will all those pieces add up to a defense capable of avoiding the letdowns of years past?
