2009 Record: 10-4 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 6 Offense, 5 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Ken Niumatalolo (Navy and overall: 18-10, 2 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Ivin Jasper Defensive Coordinators: Buddy Green

2010 Navy Players to Watch: QB Ricky Dobbs, FB Vince Murray, DE Jabaree Tuanl, LB Tyler Simmons, S Wyatt Middleton

2010 Navy Strengths:
The offense returns all of its top skill position performers. Dobbs could go down as one of the finest quarterbacks in Navy history. Curry is agame-breaker as arunning and pass-catching threat, while Murray sets the tone by getting the tough yards inside.

2010 Navy Weaknesses:
All four starting linebackers. including top tacklers Ross Pospisil and Tony Haberer. graduated. Only one of the probable replacements has significant game experience. Youngsters such as Caleb King and Aaron McCauley must step up in a 3-4 system that requires the linebackers to make the bulk of tackles.

2010 Navy Offense:

Senior quarterback Ricky Dobbs is a tough, powerful runner who also possesses a strong, accurate arm, giving Navy its top dual-threat of the triple-option era. Dobbs rushed for 1,203 yards and completed 53 percent of his passes for 1,031 yards in 2009. He set an NCAA single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 27. The fullback dive is the bread-and-butter of Navy’s triple-option attach, and senior Vince Murray is the latest in a steady line of talented players at the position. Murray did not become the starter until six games into last season, but he still rushed for 971 yards – the second-highest total by a fullback in Navy history. Navy lost its top returning slotback, though, when junior Marcus Curry was dismissed from the team in early May. Curry accounted for 872 all purpose yards last season, averaging 7.3 yards per carry on pitchouts. Coach Ken Niumatalolo has called Jeff Battipaglia and Matt Molloy the best offensive tackle tandem of the triple-option era. The two seniors, who will be third-year starters, have the size to block defensive ends straight up and the quickness to reach linebackers on the second level.

2010 Navy Defense:

Left end Jabaree Tuani has been a force from his nrst day as a freshman, using his combination of speed and power to take on double-teams, collapse the pocket and generally wreak havoc. The athletic junior has 15 tackles for loss in two seasons and may be the best in Navy history at the position. Senior nose guard Chase Burge was forced into the lineup last season when the expected starter was dismissed from the academy. He performed better than expected, while right end Billy Yarborough came on strong. Linebacker is the greatest area of concern. Tyler Simmons served as a backup at both inside linebacker spots last season and was the team’s third-leading tackler (68). The senior, the biggest backer in recent program history, combines superb speed and agility with great toughness and a nasty streak. Caleb King, a strong and physical junior, seized the other starting job inside with a strong spring. However, the outside linebacker battle will continue in August. Senior strong safety Wyatt Middleton has been a pure playmaker for three seasons, accumulating 231 tackles. He combines good size and speed with tremendous instincts and is a potential pro prospect. Free safety Emmett Merchant and cornerback Kevin Edwards come off solid junior campaigns.

2010 Navy Special Teams:

Joe Buckley went 44 for 44 on extra points and 10 for 13 on neld goal attempts in 2009. Punter Kyle Delahooke boasts a career average of 42.4 yards that ranks second in Navy history.

2010 Navy Predictions:

The program is rolling with seven consecutive winning seasons and seven consecutive Commander-in-Chief trophies. Dobbs has the experience directing the triple-option offense to put together a huge season – for himself and for the Midshipmen, who should be ready to face a challenging schedule.
