NCAA Football Power Rankings – Week 6

South Carolina’s dramatic 35-21 upset of Alabama this past Saturday afternoon has opened the door for a number of teams with national title aspirations. Right now there are nine teams from the major conferences and four from the mid-majors that are still undefeated and still believe they can work their way into one of the top two spots when the first BCS rankings come out a few weeks from today. In reality, as long as Ohio State and Oregon keep winning they should remain No. 1 and No.2. and on a collision course to meet in the BCS title game.

Here is a look at my top five after six weeks of action along with each team’s current odds to win this year’s BCS title.

Ohio State 9/2

Ohio State moved to 6-0 on the year and 2-0 in the Big 10 with a 38-10 win over Indiana this past Saturday. Buckeye’s QB Terrelle Prior threw for a career-best 334 yards and three TD’s in Jim Tressel’s 100th victory as Ohio State’s head coach. The Buckeyes covered as a 24 ½ point home favorite and the total stayed ‘under’ the 59 ½ point line. Ohio State and the surprising Michigan State Spartans continue to remain the front-runners for the conference title.

Oregon 10/1

It was not the sharpest game that Oregon has played this year, but the Ducks managed to move to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the PAC 10 with a 43-23 win over Washington State in a game that was closer than the 20 point margin of victory. They only had a 13 point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but put the game away with a 34 yard scoring strike from backup QB Nate Costa to Jeff Maehl with a little more than 11 minutes left to play. Oregon did not come close to covering the 36 ½ point spread and the total stayed just ‘under’ the monster 70 ½ point line.

Boise State 7/1

Boise State rolled to its fifth straight victory of the season with a 57-14 win over Toledo. The Broncos opened up a 36-7 lead at the half behind a couple of Kellen Moore touchdown passes and coasted in the second half to the 43 point win. He ended the day completing 16-of-22 attempts for 267 yards and three TD’s. Boise State easily covered as a 38 point home favorite and the total went ‘over’ the 60 point line.

Nebraska 15/1

Nebraska jumped into my top five with an impressive 48-13 win over Kansas State in its Big 12 opener last Thursday night. The Cornhuskers are now 5-0 on the year and in perfect position to make not only a run at the Big 12 title, but the national title as well. This game was all about Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez who completed just 5-of-7 passing attempts for 128 yards and one TD, but added 241 yards on the ground on 15 carries with four of them resulting in scores. The Cornhuskers easily covered as an 11 point road favorite and the total went ‘over’ the 47 point line.

TCU 8/1

Texan Christian notched its sixth straight victory of the season and second one in the MWC with a 45-0 shutout of Wyoming this past Saturday. Horned Frogs QB Andy Dalton bounced back from a poor showing the previous week against Colorado State by completing 14-of-17 attempts for 270 yards and three TD’s. TCU’s defense recorded its second straight shutout for the first time in 55 years after blanking the Rams 27-0 the week before. The Horned Frogs covered as a 34 ½ point home favorite and the total stayed ‘under’ the 48 point line.
