NCAA Football Power Rankings – Week 7

For the second week in a row the No.1 team in the country was upset and knocked out of my top 5. Two weeks ago South Carolina upended Alabama 35-21 and this past Saturday, Wisconsin ran all over then-No.1 Ohio State 31-18. My No. 5 ranked team; Nebraska was also upset 20-13 by Texas, so this week’s rankings ended up quite different than my previous one.

Here is a look at my top five after seven weeks of action along with each team’s current odds to win this year’s BCS title.

Oregon                4/1

Oregon ascends to the top spot without having to play a down as the Ducks were idle this past weekend. They are 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the PAC 10 after knocking off Washington State 43-23 in their last game as a 36 ½ point road favorite. This week they face-off against UCLA (3-3) in a Thursday night nationally televised conference showdown.

Boise State          5/1

Boise State continues to roll in the WAC with a 48-0 shutout of San Jose State this past Saturday. The Bronco’s covered as a 40 ½ point road favorite and the total stayed ‘under’ the 56 point line. QB Kellen Moore only had to work a half day as he took a seat in the second half after completing 14-of-16 attempts for 231 yards and two TD’s in the first. The win was the Bronco’s 20th in a row, which is the longest active streak in Division 1A.

TCU                       8/1

TCU may not get the respect it deserves from the BCS rankings, but it moved up to number three in my rankings with yet another impressive defensive showing in its 31-3 win over MWC rival Brigham Young. The Horned Frogs did not cover as a 30 point home favorite, but they did improve to 7-0 on the season and their defense has now given up a total of just three points in their last three games. On Offense, QB Andy Dalton looked sharp, completing 66.7 percent of his passes for 273 yards and four TD’s.

Auburn                15/1

Auburn moved into my rankings with another impressive win against a ranked opponent from the SEC. The Tigers game out on top of a wild shootout with then-No. 12 Arkansas 65-43 in a game they were favored to win by 3 ½ points as home. The total line of 60 never stood a chance in this one as both teams racked up 108 points and over 1000 yards of total offense. QB Cameron Newton only threw for 140 yards, but he gained 188 yards on the ground to lead the Tigers. They have a huge showdown next Saturday with the other Tigers from the SEC; 7-0 LSU.

Oklahoma            6/1

Oklahoma’s 52-0 win over Iowa State coupled with Nebraska’s loss not only moves the Sooners into my top five, it puts them in the driver seat for a national championship after being ranked No.1 in the initial BCS poll which was released this past Sunday night. Oklahoma’s victory as a 23 point home favorite moves it to 6-0 on the year overall and 2-0 in the Big 12 South. Sooner QB Landry Jones was extremely impressive, completing 30-of-34 attempts for 334 yards and three TD’s. This win sets up a huge showdown with No. 11 Missouri next Saturday. The Tigers are currently on top off the Big 12 North at 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
