2009 Record: 8-5 WAC Record: 7-1 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 9 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Chris Ault (Nevada and overall: 206-96-1, 24 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Ault (pass), Cameron Norcross (run) Defensive Coordinators: Andy Buh

2010 Nevada Players to Watch: QB Colin Kaepernick, RB Vai Taua, TE Virgil Green, OL John Bender, WR Chris Wellington, WR Brandon Wimberly, DE Ryan Coulson, LB James-Michael Johnson

2010 Nevada Strengths:
Nevada Is always one of the top rushing teams in the country, ranking no lower than 24th in the nation since 2005. With two of their record three l,000-yard rushers back from last season, the Wolf Pack will once again be dangerous on the ground.

2010 Nevada Weaknesses:
Some great defensive pieces will be in place in 2010 with six returning starters, but success will depend upon whether or not the players around them can step up. Conference games at Hawaii, Fresno State and Louisiana Tech will be tricky.

2010 Nevada Offense:

Nevada is poised to have one of the best offenses in the WAC, if not the country. It returns nine starters to a squad that finished first in the nation in rushing and second in total offense. The Wolf Pack also became the first team in FBS history to have three l,000-yard rushers in a season. Two of the three, quarterback Colin Kaepernick and running back Vai Taua, return. Coach Chris Ault would like to see more balance on offense, and he has the depth at receiver to do just that. Senior Chris Wellington played well through numerous injuries last season. Tray Session showed promise and Brandon Wimberly was the WAC Freshman of the Year. Tight end Virgil Green, a second-team All-WAC selection a year ago, provides another target. Kaepernick, a 6-6 senior, can throw; he just hasn’t needed to. He attempted only 282 passes last season, but rated fourth in the conference in passing efficiency. He completed 58.9 percent of his passes and threw for 20 touchdowns with only six interceptions. Three starting linemen return, but the new starters are raw. Jeff Meads hardly played last year, and Jose Acuna served as the primary backup at both tackle spots.

2010 Nevada Defense:

Not to say the defense hasn’t been good, it just hasn’t been great – at least not the entire defense. Nevada ranked first in the WAC in stopping the run last year, but last in containing the pass. An almost entirely new secondary will try to turn that around. Cornerback Isaiah Frey is the only returner of the group, while the most compelling addition is former Utah player Corbin Louks. The junior was projected to eventually become Utah’s starting quarterback, but he decided to transfer when Utah went another direction. Nevada hopes he can spearhead a turnaround in the secondary. There’s no reason to believe the linebackers and defensive front won’t put together another great year. Dontay Moch, the WAC’s Defensive Player of the Year, returns at end, while Ryan Coulson takes over full time at the other end position after Kevin Basped’s early departure for the NFL. Two of three starting linebackers return. The newcomer of the group, junior college transfer DeAndre Boughton, earned a starting job with an outstanding spring camp.

2010 Nevada Special Teams:

Nevada didn’t attempt too many field goals last season, but Ricky Drake usually came through. He connected on 6 of 9 attempts, by far the fewest of any primary kicker in the conference. Returning punter Brad Langley carried the WAC’s fourth best average in 2009 (41.1). Junior college transfer Rishard Mathews gives Nevada additional receiver depth and a very athletic return man.

2010 Nevada Predictions:

With so many returning starters and a schedule that includes seven home g’ames, including Boise State, Nevada should hold off the rest of the WAC for second place. Further national respect depends on early season games against Cal and at BYU.
