2009 Record: 1-11 MWC Record: 1-7 2010 Returning Starters: 12: 5 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker,

Coach: Mike Locksley (New Mexico and overall: 1-11, 1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Darrell Dickey Defensive Coordinators: Doug Mallory

2010 New Mexico Players to Watch: OT Byron Bell, RB Demond Dennis, DE Jaymar Latchison, LB Carmen Messina, DE Johnathan Rainey

2010 New Mexico Strengths:
Rainey, a second-team All-MWC selection, is the lynchpin of adefensive line that has talent. experience and depth. Illinois transfer Reggie Ellis should make an impact on the interior, and don’t be surprised if highly touted freshman Calvin Smith does the same.

2010 New Mexico Weaknesses:
The three returning quarterbacks Brad Gruner, Tate Smith and B.R. Holbrook – are holdovers from the previous regime and none is ideal for Locksley’s spread option. Newcomers Stump Godfrey and Tarean Austin fit the mold, but are true freshmen.

2010 New Mexico Offense:

The most ominous fill-in-the-blank on the Lobos roster is at quarterback. Brad Gruner (knee) and Tate Smith (shoulder) missed much of the spring with injuries, which could set them behind B.R. Holbrook. None probably fits what coach Mike Locksley is looking for, therefore freshmen Tarean Austin and Stump Godfrey could see early playing time. Whoever lands at quarterback will have plenty of backfIeld support. UNM’s stable of backs has talent, balance and seasoning. The top three rushers return, including the explosive Demond Dennis, who ran for the most yards last year (427). James Wright is a jackhammer who could get more carries as UNM wants a more physical running game. Kasey Carrier played in the last fIve games and is another speed option. The Lobos return both left-side starters on the line, including potential pro prospect Byron Bell. But UNM has to replace three-year starter Erik Cook at center. Leading receiver Ty Kirk (427 yards) is back along with Freshman All-American tight end Lucas Reed. The other spots are up for grabs, with plenty of ability to burn.

2010 New Mexico Defense:

The anchor of this unit is the line, where there are three returning starters, including Johnathan Rainey, who led the league in tackles for loss (15.5). This group gets an influx of quality depth with Illinois transfer Reggie Ellis and top recruit Calvin Smith, a signing day surprise. Behind them is linebacker Carmen Messina, who led the nation in tackles last year with 162 13.5 per game. UNM should benefIt from four experienced cornerbacks, including both of last year’s starters. The area of biggest competition, perhaps on the team, will be at safety. One possibility is A.J. Butler, a running back last season. The group needs to show improvement because UNM was among the nation’s worst last year on third down.

2010 New Mexico Special Teams:

After turning in the best freshman season by any kicker in UNM history, James Aho fell a bit last season as a sophomore. He stumbled in key moments – missing three fIeld goals against BYU and a potential game winner vs. rival New Mexico State – but did have the kick that gave UNM its only win. New punter Ben Skaer has to fIll the cleats of Adam Miller, who led the MWC in punting.

2010 New Mexico Predictions:

Second-year coach Mike Locksley has improved the talent. This year’s team also seems to fIt better within his schemes, even though the Lobos still will be relatively green. And it’s difficult to imagine the Lobos will be haunted by the multiple bad breaks and off-fIeld problems that sapped last year. UNM should take a step forward toward the MWC’s middle tier in 2010. But this remains a program in transition; the issues at quarterback make that obvious. Those growing pains plus a challenging nonconference slate – including Oregon and Texas Tech -likely will put the postseason out of reach.
