2009 Record: 9-5 MAC Record: 7-1 2010 Returning Starters: 14: 6 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker,

Coach: Frank Solich (Ohio: 32-31, 5 years Overall: 90-50, 11 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Gerry Gdowski, Tim Albin Defensive Coordinators: Jimmy Burrow

2010 Ohio Players to Watch: QB Boo Jackson, WR LaVon Brazill, OT Joe Flading, LB Noah Keller

2010 Ohio Strengths:
The Bobcats’ defense, especially up the middle, has enough muscle and experience to keep the team in most games (save the trip to Ohio State). Brazill leads a sneaky good WR corps. Jackson, if he’s healthy, will make the offense hum.

2010 Ohio Weaknesses:
The offensive line makes Solich sweat, and without a bell-cow back, Ohio could find scoring to be a challenge. The Bobcats don’t know exactly what they have – except inexperience – at cornerback.

2010 Ohio Offense:

The return of injured quarterback Boo Jackson will garner a lot of headlines. But the story of the Ohio offense this season could be written by its offensive line. The Bobcats, who return frve of their top seven linemen, were one-dimensional last season and need to improve their run-blocking after hnishing 11th in the MAC in rushing. Chris Garrett, the team’s top runner in 2009, is gone and his backups didn’t inspire confidence. Junior college transfer Kenny Ashley, a 5-8, 230 -pound bowling ball once recruited by USC, could be a sleeper in that mix. Jackson missed most of the 2009 season and spring ball with a shoulder injury, so his timing might be an issue in fall workouts. But Jackson, a redshirt senior who started 10 games in 2008 and plays with a sense of calm, hgures to step right in … provided there are no setbacks in his recovery from a torn labrum. He’ll be pushed by junior Phil Bates, who impressed coach Frank Solich with his accuracy. Solich believes Bates can win with his physical skills – or be extra-special if he maintains a completion percentage in the 60S. Bates might not start, but he’ll get a long look in Ohio’s spread “Pistol” package. The Bobcats lost top wide receiver Taylor Price to the NFL, but they still have wideouts LaVon Brazill and Terrence McCrae, who had nine touchdown receptions last season. Brazill had 53 catches for 702 yards and six touchdowns.

2010 Ohio Defense:

Ohio returns most of the unit that tied for the national lead (with Texas) in takeaways last season with 37. Back are the Bobcats’ top eight defensive linemen and arguably the top linebacker in the conference, middle ‘backer Noah Keller. He registered 155 tackles last season and expects to be in that range again in 2010. The safety tandem of Steven Jackson and Gerald Moore is back. And coaches raved about cornerback Omar Leftwich, a junior college transfer who moved to the top of the depth chart in the spring with the Bobcats’ starters out with injuries.

2010 Ohio Special Teams:

Brazill had three punt returns for touchdowns and provided many of the big plays that made Ohio a contender in 2009. The Bobcats may try to rotate returners this season after trying out other receivers and cornerbacks in the spring. All-MAC kicker Matthew Weller, who had a 52 yard held goal last season, is an invaluable weapon. Ohio was in seven games decided by seven points or less last season.

2010 Ohio Predictions:

Solich has earned a strong reputation in the MAC, with two East Division titles and a pair of nine-win seasons in his hve years at Ohio. That success helped the former Nebraska coach recruit better top-to-bottom talent, and the Bobcats could be MAC champions this season if they show a finishing kick.
