2009 Record: 8-5 PAC 10 Record: 6-3 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 8 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Mike Riley (Oregon State and overall: 64-47, 9 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Danny Langsdorf Defensive Coordinators: Mark Banker

2010 Oregon State Players to Watch: RB Jacqulzz Rodgers, WR James Rodgers, DE Gabe Miller, DT Stephen Paea, LB Dwight Roberson, CB James Dockery

2010 Oregon State Strengths:
The Rodgers brothers do it all. Jacqulzz grinds out yards and breaks big plays out of the backfield. He developed Into areceiving option last year. James is a deep threat as a wideout, can run the fly sweep and return punts and kickoffs deep. Paea is a preseason All-American.

2010 Oregon State Weaknesses:
Years in which OSU debuts a new quarterback have been difficult ones. How the offense moves the ball depends on how quickly Ryan Katz emerges. Finding blockers for the Rodgers brothers is needed. One guard position remains open and the other starter (Grant Johnson) missed spring practice to recover from shoulder surgery.

2010 Oregon State Offense:

Again, everything for Oregon State hinges on the quarterback. This time, the Beavers are breaking in a new starter, and that usually signals trouble. Sophomore Ryan Katz came out of spring practice as the the top option. Peter Lalich, a Virginia transfer from 2008, and redshirt freshman Cody Vaz had their shining moments at camp. Katz, however, has played in the system the longest and received playing time last season. His conndence grew throughout the spring. Whoever gets the starting nod has the luxury of handing off to Jacquizz Rodgers, a Heisman Trophy candidate. After back-to-back seasons of more than 1,250 rushing yards, Rodgers is getting fully noticed nationally. He is small in stature (5-7, 188 pounds), but is a fearless worker between the tackles. Rodgers has surprising strength. He’s shifty, changes direction with ease and nnds holes in the defense. When he’s through the line, he kicks into a higher gear. Plenty of options still exist in the passing game. Rodgers’ brother, James, can do it all. He goes long, catches the ball short and makes people miss, and runs the fly sweep. Receivers Markus Wheaton and Jordan Bishop can stretch the held. If defenses worry too much about the Rodgers brothers, they should benefit.

2010 Oregon State Defense:

Heading into the offseason, this appeared to be one of the team’s better defenses in recent memory. And then a pair of projected starters – middle linebacker David Pa’aluhi and defensive end Matt LaGrone – left the team in the winter because of family issues. Then, linebacker Keith Pankey ruptured an Achilles’ tendon in winter workouts. His status won’t be fully clear until the season starts. Talented replacements in linebacker Tony Wilson and defensive end Taylor Henry are in the fold, but they lack experience. Both had productive springs. Standout defensive tackle Stephen Paea still has enough around him that he can terrorize the middle of offenses. Last year’s young secondary saw vast improvement – enough to expect a big season in 2010. Cornerbacks Brandon Hardin and James Dockery are asked to play on an island, while safeties Lance Mitchell and Cameron Collins support the run hrst, then help in coverage.

2010 Oregon State Special Teams:

Placekicker Justin Kahut and punter Johnny Hekker head into their third seasons as starters. Kahut has a big leg, but has a tendency to miss extra points. Hekker, a former high school quarterback, has added holding to his duties. James Rodgers has been a dynamic kickoff return guy for three years; he’ll double up and return punts, too.

2010 Oregon State Predictions:

Someone needs to take over the offense at quarterback. Katz should get hrst crack at it. He’ll have plenty of support with talented receivers and ball carriers. The defense should keep the team in games while Katz develops. If all goes right, the Beavers will be back knocking on the Rose Bowl door, just like the last two seasons.
