2009 Record: 13-1 Big 12 Record: 8-0 2010 Returning Starters: 12: 5 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker

Coach: Mack Brown (Texas 128-27,12 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Greg Davis Defensive Coordinators: Will Muschamp

2010 Texas Players to Watch: QB Garrett Gilbert:. RB Tre’ Newton, WR Malcolm Williams, LT Kyle Hix, DE Sam Acho, CB Curtis Brown, CB Chykle Brown, CB Aaron Williams

2010 Texas Strengths:
Even with the loss of Earl Thomas, the Longhorns might have the best secondary in the nation. The Longhoms don’t have many individual stars according to the preseason watch lists, but they collectively remain one ofthe nation’s deepest and most talented programs.

2010 Texas Weaknesses:
The Longhorns need someone to step up at receiver. Aaron Williams, John Chiles and James Kirkendoll have teased with their potential but lacked consistency. Brown plans to lean on his running game to help reduce the demands on Gilbert, and it would be good If afeatured back emerges rather than relying on arotation of players.

2010 Texas Offense:

Garrett Gilbert showed flashes of productivity when he was thrust into the BCS national championship game after Colt McCoy’s injury. And with McCoy gone to the NFL, Gilbert inherits the starting position with Sherrod Harris as his likely backup. Coach Mack Brown says that Texas’ running game must improve in order to relieve some of the pressure on Gilbert, who mostly took direct snaps this spring in order to facilitate a more run-oriented transformation. Bullish freshman Chris Whaley had a strong spring, capped by a team-leading 70 yards in the spring game, but coaches want him to lose weight to improve his durability. Fozzy Whittaker and Tre’ Newton could be poised for more playing time, but both have struggled with injuries. All of them likely will play in a crowded rotation that doesn’t appear to have a true starter. Even without record-breaking receiver Jordan Shipley, Gilbert has plenty of receiving options. James Kirkendoll, Malcolm Williams, John Chiles and Marquise Goodwin all had their moments last season. And don’t be surprised if a young receiver like Mike Davis or DeSean Sales emerges from a talented group of recruits. Two starters and another part-time starter return on the line, where the Longhorns must make up for the loss of Adam Ulatoski, Chris Hall and Charlie Tanner (combined 111 starts in their careers). Michael Huey has switched sides to left guard, providing experience along with returning left tackle Kyle Hix.

2010 Texas Defense:

Coordinator Will Muschamp likely will build this group around senior defensive end Sam Acho, who led the team with 10 sacks last season and appears ready to follow in the line of previous dominant pass rushing threats like Brian Orakpo and Sergio Kindle. Alex Okafor earned the starting job at the other end position in the spring. The Longhorns are stacked inside. Kheeston Randall returns at nose tackle, and redshirt freshman Calvin Howell emerged as a key contributor as the Longhorns retool from last season’s group that led the nation in rush defense and ranked second in sacks. Starters Emmanuel Acho and Keenan Robinson return at linebacker. Coaches think the team’s best could be Dravannti Johnson, who looked dominant during the spring. But the real talent can be found in the secondary. Texas has three players with lockdown comer skills – Chykie Brown, Curtis Brown and Aaron Williams. Blake Gideon returns at free safety.

2010 Texas Special Teams:

The Longhorns relied on placekicker Hunter Lawrence last season and hope that Justin Tucker makes the transition from punter and kickoff specialist smoothly. His move to placements will enable parttimer John Gold to emerge as the punter in 2010.

2010 Texas Predictions:

Garrett Gilbert should grow nicely into the quarterback position, and although the Longhorns might be lacking their usual star power, it’s just a matter of time before some of the fresh faces make big names for themselves. It will be a battle in the Big 12, but Texas still has enough to stay on top.
